#1 H165 diff can any one help with my questions
DJF280 Posted on: 2009/8/25 14:02
Hi all im looking at a diff upgrade for my coupe (have been looking at doing this for ages). What i want to know is what other vehicles beside the 1200 ute have a h165 diff centre. I think stanza, bluebird and vanett have them? which one can be shortened to fit a 1200? Im sick of looking for 1200 ute axles. I have enough centres but no axles. Now im willing to get a h165 diff from another vehicle which is more common, cheap and can get spare axles even if they have to be shortened. Cheers

no other h165 axles will be long engine to be cut down to the width of a 1200. think bluebird ones are the longest and they are only just long enough to be shortened to suit a 1000

your best bet if you really want to pay $150+ per axle to suit the ute diff would be to get some h190 bluebird axles and get them cut down to suit

but the way to go owuld be to find a rusty ute and buy the whole thing and part it out. as you would probably end up getting the whole diff for free that way....ive dont that a couple of times

Here in the states, the Datsun 411 came with a H165. The width is a tad bit shorter than the stock 1200 rear end but I replaced the studs with longer ones and used a 5/16th wheel spacer. Other mods were required as well but it was all minor.

So does the h190 axle have the same spline as the h165, or is the h190 large enough to turn down to suit a h165? I had the same problem with a Holden piazza turbo lsd diff. When i went to get it shortened their is a low spot in the axles which ment the diff could only be too long or too short for a 1200.It will be good for a 1000 if any one is interested :)

411 h165s arent really going to be easier to find than a ute diff

h190 axles are about an inch or so thick, so even in there smallest part they should be big enough to lathe down to the size of the spline

presumably the bearing on the outside of a h190 is larger so you'd need to alter things to fit it? Or do they have some weird bearing?

The H190 diff out of a C120 van with the A15 would fit ubder a 1200 coupe, though you have to run front wheel drive offsets. This would get you a stronger diff & axles, but they only come with either a 4.1:1 steel housing or a 4.6:1 alloy housing.

h190 and h165 bearings are the same OD so you dont need to mod anything

since when did vanettes have alloy centres? gives me something else to look at at the wreckers

The 4.6 diff ratio is what I used in my Sunny race car & will be what I use behind the SR20DE. Weigh less than a steel h165. I've seen both 4.1 & 4.6 in vanettes, I don't know what was different, maybe the 4.1 was for passengers & the 4.6 was for cargo.
