#1 fitting an L18 into a 1200?
armiee Posted on: 2009/9/2 11:21
hey guys, just found a worked to the hilt L18 for sale for nicks and was wondering how hard they are to fit to a 1200? i know there's a fair bit involved, mounts loom etc but would it be worth the effort?

Im looking at doing a similar thing at the moment with my brothers ute. - Pleanty of info on here, to be honest, Im surprised someone here hasn't starting making & selling fitting kits for this type on conversion yet.

yeah it has to be possible, it'd be handy if maddat made a kit. I know there'd be a bit of jiggling to get it in, modifying the sump and maybe moving the battery but it'd be worth it eh

I think that Craig Williams (Former owner of Maddat)would do kits if he had gineua pig to make a Jig off...

The wiki is very vague about this conversion but many members have done it and added info through out different threads. Currently im doing this with an L16 and modded stumpy five speed box same size motor dimensions wise. Will be uploading a heap of info about it to the wiki once done including all the parts used to do mine. You dont need to change looms you just modify your old one easy as i did it in like 20 minutes.

how much would people pay for a decent crossmember?

theres actually more work involved in fitting an L series than a CA as far as engine mounts go, which is why there isnt a kit. as you have to modify a sump to fit and should also notch the crossmember to get the engine sitting real nice
so going by the normal maddat CA conversion kit price of $540 with exchange crossmember, an L series one would be up at around maybe $700 with a modded sump....i did my original conversion for maybe a quarter of that price

how worked is this engine? also how old is it? coz if it was originally built like 10 years ago and has been racing ever since theres probably a good reason its cheap. but if its a complete engine with induction and exhaust then it would be a good starting point if its cheap

but yeah, armiee if you want to have a look at an L series setup ive got my one that will most likely find its way back into the wagon whilst im building the CA

hey nick, yeah i dont know about the age, but its in a 1600 and is being used as a rally car. Its only in bendigo so i thought it'd be worth the trip, it comes with an a87 head, wade cam, comes with dizzy alt flywheel and clutch, so for 400 bucks i thought it'd be interesting. You had an L18 in yours hey nick?

thats sounds like a basic L18...not a worked to the hilt one

yeah had a real L18 rally motor in mine before the CA, its worked to the hilt
L18 block
modded L20b crank
mystery rods
SR pistons
ported A87 head with L28 valves
ARP head studs
custom grind cam
regraphed electic dizzy
twin 45mm webbers
very light flywheel
all built about 4 years ago, made 95rwkw at the dyno day
