#1 63a 5 speed selector reassembly issues
woody Posted on: 2009/10/5 4:00
hi guys im having a bit of an issue putting the extension housing and selector fork and rod assembly back on my 63a 5 speed box. in my stupid rush i didnt watch how it all came apart but i know it was a pain in the a$$ to get off. what i need to know is what position do i put the selector fork (the tounge that engages in the selector rods for the gearset) in and the little part next to it that can spin 360 degrees and looks like it attaches to the fork then goes onto the reverse gear selector rod??? i have a couple of 60 series 4 speeds if they are the same setup (i cant remember if they are) that i could pull apart to check. any help would be appreciated cheers kurt

My bad - looks like you already got it past this point.

1st off, get a book or just print this out...

http://www.rivergate5speed.com/desc_of_trans.html

secondly, get a digital camera & take lots of pic's, thirdly dismantle in a seriously orderly fashion, this is what I did...

these are the internal forks that the shifter rod has to slot into, the trick I seem to remember is the internal ones need to be aligned perfectly for the shift rod to fall into the slot when installing the tail housing

print out the manual & be systematic otherwise there's a 99% chance you'll f*** it up!

good luck.

thanks edp im past all this im a second year apprentice mechanic and have done all that i had to replace the imput shaft. all i need to know is what initial position do i put the selector fork in whilst im sliding the extension housing on to engage in the selector rods. from memory i had to twist it quite alot to get it to go in.
thanks kurt

with the 4 speed's its hard to the right past revers, you can feel it if you hit the end and then push harder it moves a'little futher.

from my recollection it not important what gear position the shifter lever is in rather making sure the receiving forks are aligned properly. Obviously this is done with the housing off then just play with the tailshaft housing. If when its on & all gears shift, you're done.

I know that upon reassembly I didn't even think about shifter position I just aligned those forks & played with it until it went in properly, took a few trys. I remember pulling it apart once & having to clean up the RTV silicone.

yeah ive been playing with it and the silicone has dried twice. they are aligned correctly i think ive just got to play with it some more to get it in the right position

take the housing off & post some pic's of the tranny assembly. I assume you made sure it shifted thru all gear sets before installing the housings?

I dont remember anything "spinning 360 degree's", which part are you referring to?

according to page 14 of the manual I posted a link to the "striking lever" & gears need to be in the neutral position.

thanks guys, i finally got it all sorted, i had to interlock the fork in the other position that i was, thats the arm that engages 4th, 5th gear, its what spins 360 degrees inside the housing. another thing was that i had to put the front plate on first which held everything in place and stoped the selctor rods from sliding to far forward and the damn dog teeth from poping out, that was driving me mental and engaging 2 gears at once. now ive checked it all and im bout to put it back in the car and go to wakefield for a track day on thursday now. thanks for your help edp

they are an arse of a thing to get back on arent they....played around with my one for ages as that little spinning bit kept on disengaging from the main selector

i did mine with the bellhousing section off though...didnt have any problem with the selector shafts moving

Last one I did I had to select the gear which allowed the striker finger to hold the selector rod bit which is hinged so that it couldn't drop down. (Or something like that)
