New points can be gap-set to 0.018-0.021 inch (0.45-0.55 mm).
Used points must not use these measurements. Use a dwell meter and set to 49-55 degrees dwell.

Why? Consider that you are in the bush, far from any parts store. Your points burn out. But, in the boot is an old set. It will enable you to proceed.
But more commonly, one may wish to adjust the points after six months or so. Using a thickness gauge will result in inaccurate setting due to the natural pitting that occurs. Instead, a dwell-meter will give an accurate measurement with both new and old contact points.

If I remember rightly, the book says, ..... reset points gap at 5,000 miles & replace with new at 10,000 miles.
This was the industry standard for decades, so, fit new points, drive for 5,000 miles, then reset your [now] used points & timing, then drive another 5,000 miles & replace with new again. As for me, ... well screw that, I fitted a Pertronix electronic conversion & have NEVER looked back.

Well, I guess that you could always go to your favorite search engine & type in Pertronix
Then, you could select from the list & go to Pertronix Australia & NZ. From there you could navigate your way around to learn all about it. You might even contact them to ask where your nearest retailer is located. Now that shouldn't be too hard & you will quickly become an expert on the subject. Have a look at some of the other sites thrown up by your search engine, just for fun. ![]()

Just keep a matchbook in the glove box. When the points quit out on the road you can sand oxide off the contacts with the striker and set the gap with the matchbook cover.
