start up problems

HI! I have a problem with my Datsun 1982 210. I think it may be an ignition problem... In park with the e-brake on I turn the key (the lights can come on and the radio) but when I try to start it, it doesn't respond AT ALL. Doesn't start up the engine. I tried to twist the key, turn the steering wheal, for about 15 minutes. I put it in neutral and it starts up no problem. (???)
Anyhow, any info. would be helpful! We considered it to be either an ignition problem or possibly something to do with my transmition? Hmmm...

It is a problem in the shifter mechanism.
The shifter has an electrical switch which prevents starting the engine in any except Drive and Nuetral. The solution may be a simple adjustment. Does it start in Drive if you wiggle or push/pull the shifter a little toward the next gear? If so an adjustment may solve it. Otherwise the switch could be replaced. Or just put the brake on, pull it into Nuetral to start the engine.

I did have a problem getting it to start in drive. I didn't know what was wrong with it at first so I spent 10 minutes moving the steering wheal, and moving the key around in drive. Didn't work. I called my friend, and he said to try putting it in neutral. Sure enough, it worked no problem. Thank you for your advice, I haven't payed much attention to the shifter being the problem, so we will test it out!

Sorry, I wrote the wrong thing. It should NOT start in Drive. Only in Park or Nuetral.
If it starts in Drive, get it fixed, because that is a safety issue.
