#1 Checking if I can post yet

Still getting chucked out randomly. But love my Datsuns, so I am lurking...

Engine bay updated, built slightly shorter but 100% balanced turbo manifold. Fitted 60-2 Dictator management, wasted spark coils and completely redid wiring for ECU.

Built and fit a 76mm mandrel bent 316 stainless zorst, turbo to tip.

Chucked an Alfa LSD in there for good measure.

Did a tune to make sure nothing checks out when I kick it in the nuts.

Net effect is nice launch, still trying to lift the front wheels, and a new 1/4 mile time of 12.8 seconds.

What a beautiful build, very neat and the envy of many even Datsun diehards
that would usually smurk at Toyota cosworth architecture replica hearts :).
Can I ask if you kept the alfa stud pattern and brakes?
I have a couple of these diff and wanted to convert one of my datsuns as soon as
possible with one. Can you list what you did?

How do you find the boost characteristics or personal experience in driving this beast?

Thanks, I try to constantly do something to keep it up to date. On the cards is a complete respray, the paint is getting thin and flaky in some areas, which is the reason for the black ass as it is now, just a stop gap for some ugly paint problems...

No, I simple drilled the Alfa flanges to 114.3 PCD, 90 degrees out of phase with the old holes, and fitted studs in them. The flanges are plenty thick and strong and I don't think doing this will weaken them in any way.

I kept the Alfa disks yes, the pads are a bit thin on the ground, but they are the same as some later model Datsun and even Porche so you will get them. The original Datsun cable hooks in with a possible change to the length with some spacers for the handbrake(e-brake/parking brake). I left the handbrake of though, as I have an electronic solenoid which is does the job of the handbrake now, slightly step on brakes before switching of and it locks the back disks.

I cut all the original Alfa brackets off, made new saddles which was tacked on the housing with the diff in it's place resting on the leaves in the car and at the right angle. Welded it up outside, and fit it back in.

The Alfa diff is 35mm wider flange face to flange face. Not much, but with the wheels I was running, it was rubbing slightly, just had to roll the arches slightly and knock some of the underbody out the way. Works perfectly, and I don't understand, apart from keeping it 100% Datsun, why more guys don't use these on this forum, they are very popular in South Africa for the Datsun 1200 cars and bakkies.

I did upgrade the LSD portion though, they come standard with only 2 friction plates, 1 each side. Removed 2 spacers and replaced them with 2 friction plates, as I wanted it to lock up faster. Drives like any normal diff when just cruising, but any larger than normal prod on the loud pedal and it locks up instantly. Works great!!!

EDIT: On the driving experience, it gives me about 12km/liter of petrol if I just cruise at 120km/h. Any kick in the nuts and it gulps juice like it's free. If you look at the power graph, it already gives more everything at even as low as 3000rpm, than the original 1200 motor does, so it's perfectly tractable in any condition. Even in traffic it's a puppy, the upgraded clutch is a bit more difficult to control, but still ok.

The zorst is very quiet, with people always asking me to start it, "so we can hear what it sounds like", and when I start it they remark, "but it sounds like a Datsun", well duh...hahaha

I have a high low boost set-up, so for normal driving I just keep it on 0.5bar of boost, but when it's called for I flip a switch and goes up to 1 bar of boost to unleash all those horsies. Anyway, real pleasure to drive, and always good to give a hot hatch, what you guys call "ricers", the hiding they deserve.

Love what you have done with your car. I'm still deciding about the 4AGE for my GX. What gearbox are you running and what did you have to do to fit the gearbox into the firewall ??

I'm also still quite new with all these mods. When you run a wasted spark system, how does this work ??? Does it take the place of the distributor ???

wasted spark just means two plugs fire at the same time.
It can use a distributor or not.

See Wasted Spark Setup for further discussion

Very nice Dr Jekyll and Hyde at the flip of a switch. :)
The Alfa diff is probably the most beautifully designed Live axle unit ever made.
The only problem in Australia is their rarity. I can get about 8 of the non-lsd
units for the R/P if I need but I already have 2 lsd units from the 2liter.
Funny that the pads at the rear are also found on Nissans. Im thinking of shortening
it from one side as the 1000 only has a 118cm wide unit. Also want to use Pintara
calipers instead as they are lighter than the Alfa units.
I angle grinded the big bolt at the top as itll prob scrub underneath and will never
mount that part to the body.
A great project with a diff that resembles the Winters Quickchange units.
Where did you get the extra friction plates from? Alfa dealers?

@Stock1200Ute1 - Goal time will always be as short as possible, but I've never intended for it to be a dedicated drag car, so I always want it to be roadable.

@hattinid - Thanks, if you look under my profile, you can find a bbuild log of my entire car, I used to be on here often, but when they changed the site log in was impossible(seems to be a bit better now, though I still have to log in 5 or 6 times to make one post)

@ddgonzal - I'll add some more info to the wasted spark thread, there are some benefits to be had.

@D - Ya, I simply ground off anything that was on the tubes, apart from the breathing tube. I left the big bolt, as I might consider doing something with a Panard rod at some stage, and that looked like a good mounting point. Here in ZA they are hens teeth as well. I initially wanted to do a M75(Hilux diff), but couldn;t find a LSD unit for it, a guy with this one said I must swap him with about R600(+/-$100AU) cash difference. I was happy as can be, since these diff sell loose for upwards of R6000. I found an old guy in a shop on our local racetrack, which had a bunch of the friction plates in his shop that were in very good condition, the ones already in there weren't very worn either, so I just got the two best ones from his bunch and added them.

There's a site that sell them new, about $50US, but apparently some of the earlier BMW LSD units had exactly the same plates in them. They are actually ZF units, so it's not impossible that you'd find some others that would fit.

Here's a site with some info on the Alfa diff.

http://www.alfamilano.com/articles/lsd/alfa_lsd_rebuild.html

And the one that sell the plates, I see they actually £50 one, but still they are available.
