Gearbox input shaft play - how much is too much?

How much play should there be in the gearbox input shaft? And how much is excessive? I've got a gearbox and the input shaft has a mm or two of play at the far end of the shaft..

1 mm is normal. It's a ball bearing.
There is no specification for it, just be careful when installing or removing and support the weight of the gearbox while the shaft is in the clutch.
