#1 weird wheel wobble- help needed
Posted on: 2010/11/19 12:38
well went for a drive tonight and between 90 and 110 i get a wobble through the car- not just the wheel- if you go under 90kmh or over 110kmh (according to inaccurate speedo) it disappears, but in between these it comes and goes as it pleases (usually comes in on flat roads and disappears on inclines and declines and cambered corners)

Wheel alingment and balance done- all fine. Wheel nuts done up fine.

shocks bolted in, camber tops tight. its got me stumped.

could it be wheel bearings (feel ok when you manually shake the wheel) or a sticking brake caliper (im suspect on the front passengers brake caliper). It really has got me baffled.

It did it with the a15 too but then disappeard, and has reappeared with piggy too.

well it cant be axle tramp ,its an L series haha

could it be something to do with the tail shaft balance ?? or a harmonic rythm in the car ,ive heard of early mitsi lacers having little pieces of rubber put in between certain parts of the car to stop harmonics and noise

good luck mik !

cant be tailshaft- did it sometimes before the L series conversion. thought about harmonic rytms too, but too hard to track down.
thoght might be the track issues with stanza conversion stuff, could be a dodge ball joint or from the rear diff.

its just strange how it comes and goes at random- even if your holding same speed and revs, just depends on the angle of the car on the raod. weird and not to reassuring

no flat spots on the tyres?? but to me it does sound like a balnce problem or something not done up right....or is some of the holes for the shockies a bit oval shape at all? just a thought

two things come to mind, 1. front uni joint [check for wear] and 2. extention housing tail shaft yoke bush/bearing [these wear out with time] they're often overlooked when transmissions are rebuilt.

cheers

Definately wheel balance is involved, but in this case it is amplifying because of another issue such as balljoint inner track control arm bush or worn strut shaft top bearing, possibly loose nut holding the insert in the strut housing.
When you fitted the L series engine I hope you sourced decent engine mounts, with a Stanza mount being very soft even when new.

send the wheels over mik and ill balance them at the shop !

benny ,i think your on to something ,it wouldnt hurt to check the box out

i dont see how it would be the box or the tailshft really, as it also happened before the L series went in.

also if it were driveline- i think it wouldnt come and go as infrequently as it does (appears and disappears with gradient of the road, no engine load)

it also causes steering wheel wobble when it happens so i feel it must be in the front end

maybe crap tyres ??

I chased a strange vibration in a car for ages once... turned out it was a delaminating tyre.

How old are the tyres? Even if they're balanced, a delamionating tyre will throw it off once the car is going as the tread can move around with respect to the carcass.
