Are the points set properly?
Turn IGN on and try opening/closing the points with a screwdriver whilst holding the coil HT lead near the block/earth. The spark should jump to earth as the points open. Check ign 12v to coil pos. coil neg to points/condensor You can also check for points opening and closing while cranking with dissy cap off. you should see a very small spark between the points as they open. Dwell on a 4 cyl is normally set between 48- 50 deg. if you have accses to a meter.

Tried checking the the contact probe at the back of the distributor cap?
Its a spring loaded carbon probe which touches the center of the distributor arm. The probe normally gets stuck to the top of the cap & this prevents current flow to the distributor arm...
