hesitation when driving

Another noob question. I've been having a little problem when driving my daily ute. For about the first 10 min. or so of driving I am having some sort of hesitation when hitting the accelerator. Happens in first, second, even third gear. When I push down the accelerator, the engine rev's up then bogs down right away and it stays bogged until i let go of the peddle...pushing it in further doesn't help any. If I let off the accelerator even the smallest bit the engine rev's right up again and I gain the power back..however, it will bog down again a little later down the road. It does this even if I have enough rpm's to shift to the next gear...when I hit the gas after shifting it bogs down again. Seems to go away when the engine is hot after about 10 minutes or so of driving. It did this before I changed the carb to my new Weber...and the intake. The problem seemed to go away for awhile at first but its back now. Any ideas? Cheers.

Seeing as it the hesitation has carried through the carb swap you may want to start checking the distributor and associated components (vacuum advance etc).
To me it sounds like the accelerator pump within the carb is set a little too heavy so that it is over-dosing the engine when you suddenly press the pedal. This pump is designed to squirt an additional supply to the engine when the accelerator is suddenly pressed (to provide enough fuel for the sudden increase). I'm not sure what carb you have but you can normally adjust the setting on the pump so that it gives a lighter dose instead of dowsing the air-fuel mix ratio and causing the engine to splutter.

Sounds like the clutch is letting go mate, pressure plate isn't as 'pressurey' as it used to be haha. Mines currently doing the same in my daily, once it warms up it's generally better but still slips when I don't change down gears to overtake or whatever.

Agre with clyons8 sounds like its getting to much fule.
I put quad fcr's on my ute and it was running way wich whenever I accelerated quickly it would bog down so I would have to back off and go again. The answer was to re-jet the carbs....

sounds like dizzy probs ... maybe a broken balance weight? but could also be over fueling ... does it have an auto choke?

Thanks for the replies friends. It is a 32/36 Weber with Auto choke. I played around a little with the idle speed adjustment and fuel mix screws. Set the idle a tad higher and the fuel mix to less rich. Still having the same problem. I reckon its got to do with either the dizzy as most of you have said so far or perhaps the fuel pump? What could be wrong with the dizzy and what should I check for? Appreciate the help once again.

If it were the fuel pump I would say you would have very different symptoms.
The dizzie could have hesitant weights, dirty points, incorrect points gap, dirty nodes in the cap, bad leads, could even be the coil? Check the spark is good and clean the spark plugs while you are at it, also check the spark plug gaps are okay. Following that check the vacuum advance is connected and working properly. I'm not sure if you have a spare dizzie but replacing it with another unit as a trial and error is somewhat easier. Or buy an electronic one and put that in place of the stock one?

Even though I have very very little knowledge of the mechanics of an automobile I think I have a gut feeling the hesitation has to due with an electrical problem I have had since I bought the ute. After about a week of driving or so, my battery goes flat and I have to recharge it for the next week. If I leave it in the garage without driving it the battery goes flat even sooner, about two days. For example, I haven't driven it the past 3 days and the battery went from normal (approx. 12v) down to (5v) after measuring it with my multimeter.
That being the case..totally speculating here but..The hesitation could be due to low voltage in the battery? Then after 10 minutes or so of driving the alternator brings the battery back up to its normal range and that's why the problem goes away? Could this be the root of the problem?

maybe the timing is out a little ?
sounds like its just cold and i think most old motors do it ,mayeb try putting a timing light on it and check the timing is where it should be ,but if the problem has carryed over with the new carb then it isnt a fueling problem unless your realy unlucky ide be checking the timing and check the choke out too ,most the time people get rid of them on dvag webers ,thats why mine ran crappy when it was cold

This sort of thing was happening with mine just last week.
BAD POINTS mate. Pop off that dizzy cap, gear box to neutral turn the engine by hand and check you've got a gap appearing inbetween those points. Mine just had no gap what so ever, would run, but blipping the throttle would cause the same problem you're describing. They're a $10 dollar part as well mate. Get a new set gap it to .020 of an inch or if you've got a dwell metre which is a great idea too, get those points to about 48-55 degrees. You can view topic.
