#1 56A vs 60A 4 speeds
BEN510 Posted on: 2011/4/20 11:31
Hey got a little problem ,
Just fitted a 60A 4 speed in place of my original 56A in my 120Y and now the clutch fork hits the bellhousing when the clutch is pushed all the way in and the pedal feels #OOPS#!

Do these boxes run a different size bearing carrier ???

Dont have time to pull it out tonight to check , might have to do it late tomorrow night before driving it to datnats on Friday morning.

Yes - bearing carrier for the 60A is different.

I had the same problem when swapping a 56A 4 speed with a 60a 5 speed. I found it was the the fork not the carrier that needed to be changed.

My 56a + a12 from a stock 120y had the long carrier. In fact the carrier that came with my 60a was a short one. I used the stock 120y long carrier and the fork from the 60a to make it work.

I believe what you need is the 60 series clutch fork with an L shaped end. I am pretty sure the series of gearbox does not determine what carrier you use, rather it is the flywheel.

I'd second the wrong clutch fork idea. The 60a gearbox has a longer bell housing area, so the clutch fork has a right angle at the top to allow you to use the same length clutch cable. Guess it was cheaper to make another clutch fork than another length clutch cable. As for a source of the proper clutch fork, C20 Vanettes with A15's have the correct one. The problem's going to be finding somebody open today who has the correct one. Maybe somebody can lend you one. Or you did what I did when confronted with the bigger box all those years ago & changed to the 'normal' one because 'this bent one can't be right'. Good luck, & if all else fails, throw the little box back in. Hope to see you all at the Nats, at least on Sunday.

I have also seen photos of a 60 series with the bell housing fork slot cut and running the 56 series fork. It was not pretty.

And whether or not you run the engine plate... which is about 5mm thick. Most A14s used the plate and so used a different length bearing carrier. I think all the flywheels have teh same face dimensions.

Suffice to say there are enough combos here that some of them don't work ...
