so we all know the myths of 10,000-11,000rpm Datto 1200's at bathurst in the 70s (under production and improved production rules the required them to use standard carbs, headers etc! lol)
Here's the legendary Tomei TS Cup Datsun 1200: ![]() TS Cup was the premier touring car class in Japan in the 70's and these 1300cc engines were developed way past their natural potential. So what does the ultimate A13 rev to? ![]()

wow, so it's true. The tell-tale is at 9250 on this historic, so in real racing surely they would have revved them higher.

has been a while. Just saw these pics elsewhere and thought they should be put up here.
DD, that's not a tel-tale, that's the hard redline. I understand its har dto let the myth die, but the engine's normal operating band is 4500-8500. They still race them just as hard as they did back in the 70s mate.

I still dont understand the obsession with rev potential of an engine, for me its nothing more than bragging rights. Why rev an engine [A13 in this case] past the point of useful Peak HP development. I am more interested in an engines ability to spin up, i.e time taken from low to high revs as well as de-accelerate, high to low revs. Reving engines to the extreme will drirectly impact on an engines reliability and logivity [spelling]

here is a video of the TS Cup B110 Coupe in all it's glory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bphqHrJS2B8&feature=related @Benny - you must remember these are race engines, where because of the cam the power band has been moved WAY beyond where you or I would be driving the engine, huge valves, amazingly worked head, the high lift and LONG duration cams (in this case as much as 310* and more) the power band is prob from 6500-9000+rpm, when they shift (e.g. from 2-3) the revs would drop about 3000 rpm, putting them back in that sweet spot, and having an extra 1000 revs for down shifts and holding that gear into the last hair pin in tskuba is priceless :)

Maybe I didn't explain my point that well, I totally agree with what you have said, [I am rather familiar with what performance can be gained from the humble A-series]. The point I was making is thare seems to be an obsession with with making [claiming] A-series engines exceed 10,000 RPM. You yourself stated that 6,500 to 9,000 is right on the money for making great power with the A. So why rev them any harder if there is no real point. Im sure there are times when the A-series would see in excess of 10k e.g downshifts and missed gear changes etc. It is a wise practise to build the engine with that extra safety rev zone to deal with the RPM spikes when and if they occur.
