#1 a couple of 5 speed questions
iDatto Posted on: 2011/6/26 12:44
so as im sure you guys have worked out, i have a 5 speed gear box, im 90% sure its a 60a, but not certain.
today i bolted it upto an a12 we have here at home and dropped the engine into the engine bay and checked out clearances for everything.
it looks as if the gearbox cross member mounts on the box are in the same place as the ones on the trans tunnel, i thought this was odd as ive always seen the mounts having to be extended to match, also, the shifter hole in the tunnel doesnt match up either.
now this is an auto chassis, so im not sure if that is why i have had this problem, ive looked through the wiki and i cant find an exact answer, have i done something wrong or is this a what is expected?
im hoping someone can shed some light, as im stumped, oh and its a 71 1200 sedan
thanks guys

If its a smooth case with "60" stamped on it it will be a
FS5W60A with the drain plug pointing down
or
FS5W60L with the drain plug pointing backwards or parralel to the box

if the rear mounts match the auto tunnel mounts , that is a bonus
if the shifter hole is different, that is a bugger

how is the clearance for the reverse switch??

If the mounts line up, it's probably a 4-speed.

Look for this mark on the transmission case:

The series casting mark is on the right side of the gearbox.

5 speed mounts do line up with Auto mounts... so that is correct

shifter hole should line up too though.... so that is weird

Auto mounts on the car are roughly 6 inches further back than on manual cars
The shifter hole is slightly different (square on auto with 4 captive nuts for shifter, round for manual with no mountings). but it's in the same place

ill have another look today, maybe i just did something wrong... hmmm oh and ill check weather its an A or L box too. thanks for the help.
oh and is there any ideas as to what i may have done wrong to not get the proper alignment ?

What is the alignment problem that you are referring to? The shifter not lining up with the automatic transmission shifter hole?

Shifter hole 'adjustment' sounds like an easier fix than fabricating mounts. Tin snips or jigsaw perhaps..

yes thats what i was planning, but i dont want to cut it up if i have done something wrong and wont have to cut it anyway... same principal as measure twice cut once. i dont wanna have to make an abortion of a trans tunnel haha
