#1 Noob question valve clearance

Hello again,

say mates i've read the valve clearance in wiki and it says it should be adjusted 0.013inch(0.25mm)COLD

But isnt 0.013inches=0.33mm? Just making sure you know...

I think you'll find that 0.013 of an inch (0.33mm which rounds up to 0.35mm) will be the hot setting.
The specs are 0.25mm cold, 0.35mm hot.

yeah, set them hot too after it gets going, always found them to be noisey if only done on cold setting

Here is what the 1971 factory service manual says:

Thanks for pointing out that 0.25 mm is not 0.013". I have corrected the article at Valve adjustment.

The Factory Service Manual is incorrect -- it should not be 0.25, but rather 0.33. Later editions do not specify a cold setting. Note that if you use 0.25 mm cold, and then warm the engine, it will be far less than the specified HOT clearance of 0.35 mm. All later manuals specify 0.35 HOT.

I tend to disagree DD.
I'd stick with .25mm cold. Any more than that and they get tappetty.
Everyone has their own opinion though of course!
It's normally the valve that grows when hot which closes the clearance. I would have thought it should be .25mm hot, 0.35mm cold.
I don't see why Dattos would be any different.
The valve is subjected to the most heat so most likely to change at different temperatures.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

shoota, that would be true is all metals are the same, but i guess the biggest difference would be alloy head and cast rockers?

Thanks. Much quieter now. Actually my feeler gauge doesn't have a .35mm one so i chose .25mm. On my first try i did not notice two feelers(.25 &.30) are stuck together and boy I panicked when the engine sounds like a broken sewing machine!

you can add 0.25 and 0.10 to get 0.35. or add 0.15 and 0.20

Yes, the COLD clearance is less than the HOT clearance. But Nissan does not recommend setting them cold. Alloy heads have a different rate of expansion that iron heads.

What I did was set them HOT, then the next morning re-checking the clearance. It was only 0.02 mm difference, not .10 mm. You are welcome to test it yourself.

0.25 mm is on the tight side. 0.35 is on the largest side -- if you go one or two thousands more clearance they start making noise. One way to double-check it is to try the next size feeler gauge and make sure it won't fit.

As a rule, on most or nearly all old jap tappets, adjustment should be done hot. Inlet @ 0.010" (0.25mm) and exhaust @ 0.012" (0.3mm). The exhaust needs a little more as it gets hotter than the inlet due to the exhaust gasses passing over it.

These settings are valid for L series also.
