#1 Need expert advise on condition of this head
lisasdecals Posted on: 2011/10/25 19:10
Hi guys.
I purchased this ported head, along with a Canon intake and a camshaft(W58). I am no mechanic, so I am asking for help.
The pictures will show the damage and also, there a weld spot on the inside. Can someone tell me if this head is crap??
I really appreciate it.
I purchased all 3 items for $150 usd.

That head is worth it's weight in scrap metal.
When they are clearly well used, no thickness or hardness tests have been done, it's impossible to quote a value from pictures. The weld in the intake tells me the porting is a backyard job.
I guess the cam is worth $150 if it's a good grind.

There is a difference between "will it work" and "is it any good".
I can easily believe this was on a running car, I've seen worse. Something has got into the port and bounced around a lot (with some water too I think) - won't stop this from working, but will make it "un-performance"
The weld in the port, looks like it's been ported into the water gallery and then welded up(sometime this works , usually leaks) this one looks like this has worked but they were scared to re- port the weld. I am assuming guides been mowed down. the port shape looks uneven across the cyls.the marks on the port were an oval manifold has been bolted up(very missmatched). again won't stop this from working but very "un-performance"
I would also measure the thickness of the head(looks thin).

so yes i think it would work, and yes i think this is a very
"un-performance" head, (stock would be better)

Thank you for you input.

Can I install the cam then on my unmolested A14? What else would I need to make it work? Again, I am a really good artist, But I definitely not a mech. I mean the head that's on there now does not have issues. I'd figured I buy it since it would have been a nice upgrade. What a suck bag!

Well at least I do not feel so bad after all, I still have the cam and a nice intake manifold from the deal.
Thanks guys! I really appreciate the honesty.

DiscoBob is spot on. Even if it wasn't for the 'breakthrough' to the water jackets and the 'abortion' of a welding job - the way the valve guides seem to have been 'cut down' is terrible. you gain about 1% flow but the guides then don't support the valves and the valves/seats hammer out a lot quicker (like in less than 1/4 the time they would with full length guides). The 'go' for any streeter (and any long distance circuit car, or where you want the motor to last a race season) is to trim the valve guide 'bosses' - the alloy around them, but leave the guides at their full length. you can 'taper' the tip of the valve guide that extends into the port, but it still retains the full length and full level of support.

In all seriousness - I wouldn't run this head on a stock engine, unless a family member was dying in the middle of nowhere and I needed to get them to hospital in the nearest town some distance away and there was no radio or chance of an airlift.

I know that's an unlikely scenario, but that head is a shocker, and the person who sold it to you needs a bit of tune up :)
