#1 Front Suspension & Brake Upgrade...advice please!!
ruredi Posted on: 2011/11/8 14:59
G'day guys,

Just need some advice on a front suspension and brake upgrade for my 1200 coupe.

Have been doing a bIt of research and am leaning toward keeping standard 1200 struts with 45mm coilover kit, KYB MK1 golf inserts, King springs, S13 vented discs, S13 Calipers.

I Believe if I used drum brake strut assembly I don't have to modify the disc to suit and it should fit straight over? I also believe this will NOT increase track??? What do you think is the better option...disc strut and hub or drum? With the S13 brakes do I have to change wheel studs? And does anyone know how much the Kev Rowley brackets are?

Was also going to includd adjustable Lower Control Arms, adjustable caster bars and camber tops, adjustable swaybar, New Radius Rods, New Ball Joints, new Steering Arms, new draglink, new inner & outer Tie Tods, all new bushes.

What do you guys think? Advice, hints and tips much appreciated.

Going to be running injected and boosted A15...mostly street use with the occasional track day.

S13 will fit 120y struts too. Sounds like a plan but why when you have a decent set of bluey struts up front already? They should stop well.

Just get some better inserts than camira- worst car ever almost

I dont like the current setup. The alignment is all wrong and doesnt handle nowhere near as good as I'd like.

Are the 120y struts better to use?

And would my 120y booster still be ok with the s13. Brakes?

How do you mean alignment? The increased track of the conversion? 10-15mm is good I find as the 1200 seems to tramline badly in road grooves from modern cars and soft tar/ashphlet.

I don't get how it handles badly? It might be simple case of spring and shock upgrade needed. Any pics of current set up?

You running 120y or larger front sway bar?

I like my front now (240z konis and 250lb coil over springs- could use slightly softer at 225lb but they were cheap 2nd hand and new) but need to work on rear. New shocks should help.

Describe what you don't like bout it and we can make suggestions. Your brakes should be good- similar to s13 in performance

The increased track is an issue with wheels rubbing on fenders for a start...I am going to over come that when I bare metal and re-spray because I will have the guards pumped or flares fitted.

I'm not too sure about the swaybar as the suspension was done before I bought it. How can I tell?

I can't explain exactly what I don't like about it...but it just doesn't hook into corners as much as I'd like...The strut inserts and springs aren't as good as they could be and I also think it could pull up better.

I'm planning on stripping and starting again from the ground up so just trying to pick the best combo for my application...and it seems the S13 combo is the favourite...trying to keep with the light theme as I'm keeping the A15. I'm going to be going over the whole thing anyway so might as well go the better option.

Would the 120y struts be better?

200b set up under 13 inch are 990 or so $$$$ or coil overs 1200 odd. I'd pay for coil overs if I had the coin or the choice- but got pretty much same set up

Can you get then without the brakes?

not sure- call them to find out... datsport do some too.

just get some stanza or 200b and if you know someone that can do them, get an ebay pair of coil over collars and there you go... or if you dont trust ebay ones get omoto ones, shoota 77 is using them with great success.
once set up, will still be round the 1k mark. $100 struts, $300 coil overs, welding and cutting, rethreading ????? brake rebulid ($200 maybe) good new shocks $300...see makes the mad dat ones look worth it.
