#1 Another issue!!!!! Man
Posted on: 2012/1/2 23:09
Well changed oil and started up this morning the tap was still there. Old oil was dark but no signs of copper in it with light or metal shavings- narrowing down the tap possibly.

Well the stock dash temp guage shot all the way to H after car was running for 1min. After market was still at 40deg. Top tank felt normal as did hoses. Disconnected temp sensor and it stoped to below c- possibly eliminating elec issue.

Reconnected it and shot to h again. After market guage read 70deg and nothing seemed abnormal except guage and the thermostat housing felt hot to touch.

So could it be stock temp sensor? Air lock(I Didnt touch cooling system at all except to check rad level) or blocked/stuck thermo stat.

If it was thermostat wouldn't after market temp read higher to? It 10cm along in the top hose too.

Grrrrr

Going by your description, sounds like the stock temp sender is faulty and is shorting out providing a direct path to earth.... Do you have another sender to substitute.

I suspect the temp sender or the Temperature Gauge.

Why not test it? Check the ohms of the sender, from the terminal to the battery ground. 116 ohms or so for a fully-warmed engine.

Only an l series one and they read too high compared to a series ones.
What would cause it to earth out?

Too much plumbers tape?

So put multi Meter pod on the temp sensor and the neg on neg terminal and look for 16ohms?

Edit: just read the wiki... Sounds like transmitter will replace with other and retest

Just switch on ignition- guage rose straight to half way not h.... After market was cold.

Went and checked again- from cold started car up temp guage on 1/4 after market below 40deg c

After 2 mins idling thermo housing felt hot and temp gauge said :

Stock 3/4 and after market 55deg.... Mmm opened rad cap and didn't see coolant flowing so at 3/4 temp the thermostat should be opened and see coolant flowing.

So will try other temp sensor tonight. If no joy will do thermostat. Otherwise I'm suspecting water pump if there's no flow. Does this sound right? Iknow hard to diagnose over net but looking for informed opinions and advice.

Ok swapped l series temp sensor in, went straight to h as well, so must be in wiring some where.... All I did was tape loom as it was and replace fusible link. Time to consult an auto elec I think. Got a spare dash cluster with dead speedo, can't see a resistor on the guages attached to cluster, so must be elsewhere.

yeh there's no resistor on the gauges -- the resistance is in the temp sender, it is a heat sensitive resistor.

There is an "instrument panel voltage regulator" built into the the Temperature gauge. If that is bad, the Fuel Gauge will also act bad.
