A mate of mine is looking to replace his points set up in the stock distributor in his rally car.

petronix has been used by a fair ppl on this site and are easy to setup as the are just a magnito setup

I put in the petronix a couple of months ago, good as gold so far

The hot spark kit works well for me :)

i used the crane cams xr3000, produces a high spark and works terrific.

Crane XR3000 and XR700 work well, but are external modules. You can buy them in Kit form with an included optical trigger and trigger installation kit.

By comparison both Pertronix and Hotspark fit inside the distributor and are internal modules that replace the points.

* for a 'cleaner' 2-wire install: Pertronix or Hotspark

* for a 'cooler' look of anodized aluminum module mounted on your inner fender or firewall: Crane XR700 or XR3000

The Crane Ignition XR3000 is higher performing than many EI units.

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of changing my ignition system from points to electronic. I have an A14 in a datsun B310 rally car.
I am deciding between running the Crane Cams XR3000 or installing an E15 electronic distributor from a N12 Pulsar.

My concern with the external module on the XR3000 is that it will constantly be covered in dust, mud, water etc and be jolted around in the rally car. Given that the module represents 75% of the purchase price it would be an expensive exercise to replace if something went wrong. Hence I am leaning towards the E15

The current points distributor I have in the car is what I believe to be a hitachi out of a B210. Code on the distributor is D411 – A3 0401 matched with a GT40 Coil.

I have a spare distributor which I think is either a series 2 bluebird or an E15 from a N12 pulsar.
The code on the dizzy is D4R – 83 – 39 22100 P4000 5805 – Can anyone tell me what I have got?
It is attached to the side of an A15. See pics attached.

Will the reliability and spark performance be better with the E15 or the XR3000?
Can anyone identify the dizzy from the code and photos?
Will that dizzy attached to the A15 bolt straight onto the A14 or will there be an issue with gear changeover?

Can anyone provide any recommendations, comments or alternate options on the above.

The E15 distributor is super reliable and can drive hot coils. Both are better than a points setup, both are high energy. The XR3000 is better at spark, but how much do you really need? Because you can buy a CDI setup that's better than the XR3000.

By the way, a GT40 coil is a low-energy coil. If you go with the 22100-P4000, just fit a coil from Pulsar or Bluebird, it a lot hotter. See EI Coil.

I have read the tech wiki entry regarding coils so I can only assume that a MSD Blaster 2 coil coupled with the E15 would suffice?

I do not know if that will work. I recommend the Bluebird Series II or Pulsar N12 coil. Only a few bucks at the wreckers, or buy them new at Nissan.
