#1 Rear wheel alignment: Ute
BeeJJ Posted on: 2012/7/13 1:52
Hey guys,
When I got my steering alignment done I was also told that my rear wheel alignment was way out. Just wondering whats the general parts that need replacing to address this?

thanks

The rear wheel alignment is non-adjustable -- just like any other live axle.

If it is out, the usual causes are:
* the axle is not attached to the springs correctly
or
* The body was in a wreck and is no longer straight

Less common reason is a bent axle tube.

Spring bushes and trailing arm bushes (if the arms arent bent, which is actually pretty common) is about alkl you can do man.

What is actually "out"? Camber? Castor? Toe?

I would def be looking at the spring bushes and trailing arm bushes mate. Particularly on the front of the diff at the left hand side. An axle tube distortion bad enough to cause that would probably be visible to the eye.

First thing you should do though, is get the back end up in the air with the weight off the wheels, and have a crack at seeing if you can get anything to move around (like checking for tie rod and castor wear in the front) Give the wheels a good wiggle in all axis, and any movement or "clacking" noises will help you get closer to the cause.

According to the report you have 4.8mm of toe out on your RHR wheel and 0.3 mm toe in on your LHR wheel. Notionally if you were able to manage to get the LHR to zero (by moving the axle relative to the springs) that would leave you with 4.5mm toe out on the RHR. If the readings from the aligner are correct the axle housing is bent. Most wheel aligners are not so good at reading the toe accurately. If the readings are near correct the vehicle should turn left much more easily than turning right - think NASCAR. It would be "interesting" to drive on loose surfaces or wet tarmac and may be wearing the inside of the RHR tyre lots.

cheers SR will do. Going to replace all front and rear bushes...

ddiesel nothing looks visibly bent and it drives pretty straight, if anything it pulls to the right...
I hope its just bushes :|

If the alignment data is correct bushes will not fix it.

I agree with ddiesel bushes won't fix this problem! You can try, because one side is out and the other isn't so if the were both out I'd say it was a bush problem, but being almost 0 on one side and 4 on the other it kinda states that one axel/housing is bent
Sorry to here and say but I'd be on the hunt for another diff

I have successfully straightened diff housings before in a couple of ways..

1. pull it out and get it straightened in a press, best way to get it exactly how you want it, did this with my old rally car after it gained a few degrees of neg camber after launching off some major yumps..

2. use an oxy torch to heat the tube cherry on the side you need to shorten, then quench with a rag soaked in water, by doing this carefully you can "pull" the tubes any way you want, just need to keep measuring it to make sure you don't over do it. Can be done in the car as long as you are careful with the oxy, KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY! Did this quite successfully with an Escort Atlas housing that had quite a tweak in a prang, got it back well within spec in half an hour.
