#1 A15 valve adjustment
edp Posted on: 2012/9/6 6:59
I've got a rocker that wont quit ticking, I can adjust the valves all set to 14mm hot then run it & it still ticks. While running I can slip the feeler gauge in between the rocker & valve & it quiets up. I've adjusted them about 3 times tonight & no major change, its almost like its loosening up after adjusting but its still tight when I check it.

I suppose I could pull the rocker shaft & install another rocker & adjuster but I wonder why it does this. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks, evan

I had the same problem on an old corolla with a 3k engine. I think I just put up with the ticking. Never did figure out that one. Maybe a worn cam? Or some other part of the valve train is worn?

More likely that you have a bent pushrod

I wondered about a bent pushrod, thats easy enough to check. now to just scrounge up a replacement if needed, I think I packed em all away, boo hoo.

are A15 pushrods different length that A12 or 14?

Yes A15 pushrods are longer.

** 141.5 mm: A10
** 152 mm: short-deck engines (A12, A12A, and 1980 A13)
** ~167 mm: tall-deck engines (A14, A15, and 1974 A13)

how wide you adjust your clearance?

try 0.30mm ex, 0.25mm in HOT

I checked the pushrod & its fine, I believe I've wiped a cam lobe as it seems to return upon further adjustment. So no more running it, time to pull it, spin it over & yank the cam & lifters.

Pisses me off as I just got the rings to seat & was feeling pretty smug about that & not having to pull it to re-ring it again. At least this can be done with leaving the crank internals untouched.

WAAHHH, AARG BOO HOO

SO it was a worn cam. I'd heard that can be the cause but with reference to a different engine. Thanks for posting the outcome!

well I dont know for sure yet but its the only logical conclusion I can come to and the machinist I discussed it with who did the work on my Plymouth 383 agreed thats the most likely cause. One of these days I'll yard it out & tear it down, let you know how it turns out.

So was the clearance bigger that what you'd set it?

I had that happen to me. Set all the clearances dead nuts, drive around for a day or two, rechecked and two of the valves clearance had increased .010".
Found I had wiped two lobes off the cam.
