#1 erratic tachometer
davecos Posted on: 2012/9/12 16:58
Hi Guys,

I recently bought a tachometer for my 1400 Nissan (not the Champ). I have asked the store where it was purchased and have been assured that it should work on the bakkie.

When idling, it is semi stable but at higher revs it is very erratic. The instructions that came with it are not very clear.
I currently have the black wire connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
The green wire to the negative coil.
And the red wire to a live fuse in the fuse box.
As far as I know this should be correct. I have recently changed the points and condenser.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Dave

What type of coil are you using? New or old style. If you have a resister next to your coil, unhook it and connect the wire together to bypass it. Your tach may settle down. Is your car running strong at high rpms? Using points? If you can, switch to electronic ignition. Start with that.

not sure if its your problem but my factory rpm gauge in my 120y above 3000rpm would flick up and down.

few days later my ignition switch started to smoke changed it and it fixed the rpm problem.

could be your switch?
