I have just replaced the timing chain on my a15. When i turn the a15 to TDC the crank key is at 12 o'clock. The illustration for Timing Allignment shows the crank key at 4 o'clock. Does the engine have to be at TDC to allign?

When I set it to this configuration it's not at TDC. The pistons are about halfway up the bore(all 4). If I set it like the image does it matter that it is not TDC?

Yes, not at TDC.
When you check the chain alignment, do not check it at TDC. Check it as shown in the diagram, with the key aligned with the camshaft centerline. You can view topic.
