But i dont know what it is it says
Temp. Compensated and has hitachi symbol
Says 12v 609 and tl1z-57c

But i cant find were it would mount on the engine bay
Anyone know what it is?

okay just figured its a voltage regulator probably why alternator wasnt charging

can i change to a alternator with inbuilt regulator?

Yes you are correct it is a voltage regulator. You will need to determine whether the alternator fitted has an inbuilt regulator or not (it may have been changed at some point and thats why regulator was not fitted).

If not and you want to replace it with a in-built regulator model this can be done. Refer to the tech wiki for detailed information (or I know in the Datsun 1200 Service manual it shows wiring variations for with and without inbuilt regs.)

Dash lights should still work even if the alternator is not charging. Sounds like you have two separate problems.

1974 B210, japan built or otherwise, used external voltage regulator. Like cadet said it's possible someone swapped a newer internally regulated model, and also possible that it's not wired correctly.
* Look on the alternator for model number
* Alternator T-connector markings of F and N
* Alternator T-connector markings of L and S
FN type is externally regulated, LS type in internal.

Dash lights not working could be a blown fuse, burnt wire, or in my case someone altered the wiring for spotlights
