Tassie to Mainland Car Transport experience

The purchase of an Improved Production car is imminent, however the car at the top of the shopping list is located in Tassie.
Has anyone used any particular company to ship a car from Tassie to the mainland? Looking for price but also keeping in mind the car is a race car, not rego'ed and not on a trailer. Car will be picked up in melb with car and trailer to complete a bloody long trip north. Thanks in advance

If you are driving to Melb, the cost difference between you picking the car from Tas v's a company to deliver it to Melb would be not much in it. If anything it may be cheaper to collect it yourself. The boat trip is cheap the further in advance you book it. Where in Tas is the car?

You could use the unregistered vehicle permit for $36 from vic roads. Allows you to drive on the road from 7am to 7pm. Might suffice for the boat. Otherwise transport the only way.

Thanks Guys.
The car will be delivered to the dock at devonport as part of the sale. Will look into prices for a car+trailer return on the boat. Then load her up for the 3500km trip. Will also Suss some companies for the complete trip.

You could if you have a mate with the same car and make a custom A frame for it to tow it and Drive to Tassie on the Boat as Benny suggested and save a fair bit.
If the A frame was designed in 2 pieces you could lug it on plane and rent a car with a tow bar and drive it back.

Prices for car and trailer on the spirit of Tasmania are very very expensive. I went in peak season (mid January) and it cost me $2400 return with 3 people on the boat in the cheapest cabin available. They think that if you're not going over without a caravan your not spending money. So if you know of someone with an enclosed trailer registered as a motor home or caravan in some way it will slice that price by 60%.
Believe me i have been there a couple of times and it is not cheap and the boat ride is the most boring thing, try and go at night so you can sleep through it, day trips absolutely suck! We were going to freight the car over with sea road shipping as we had friends over there who would let us use their tow vehicle, but they wouldnt do it without a trailer for some reason. Int he end we just spent the $ and did it. Try you're luck with spirit of tasmania though. explain to them that its a race car. if you can get that through their head (may be a difficult task!) that the guy you're buying it off can drive it on and you can drive it off, then there shouldnt be a problem, that way it will cost $80 only one way for the car, but you may have to have a person on the boat with it, so you might have to fly over. try you're luck and see how you go!

Once the unregistered car is at their docks and past the check in gate, go into the boat you dont need any permit at all just drive it into the boat (wait till 7pm when they are about to close the gate, I got there at 7.10pm was the last car in and without brakes for 30 years I almost hit their booth and later almost ran into a very late Mercedes V12 coupe and the security guides watching couldnt believe I stopped just in time! with handbrake only working as fluid in brake cylinders disappeared already and 2nd gear to slow it down) its private commercial property, park it behind the cars they tell you to and sleep all night at the sleeping deck single sofas chairs at the back (not the best sleeping conditions but cheap!) till the morning and load it up on your car trailer that you leave parked in their parking area and off you go but not after a few coffees!!
