Hey guys I know this has probably been answered so im sorry if it has but Im starting to think its time to upgrade to a 5 speed in my datto now Ive heard that it can be done and with a 5 speed out of another datto and it will bolt up.. now just wondering if someone can tell me if it will be a direct bolt in job and wont need any mods at all to the tailshaft or diff or anything or if I will need to make some mods as from what ive read real quickly some people say it will bolt straight up with no mods while others are disagreeing. thanks Andrew

All 5-speeds require some mods, mostly minor. See 5-speeds.

You sometimes need to make space in the transmission tunnel over the clutch fork, usually with a big hammer. You do have to make another gearbox crossmember, as the overdrive 5 speeds have the mount further back on the box. This is usually a U shaped plate that faces forward, so the standard mounts can be used. Or either B-Projects or Pitroad sold a kit to do the same that looked really good. I'm sure that there are photos in the Album & the wiki, showing you what to do. I can remember posting photos myself a few years ago of some I had. The tailshaft is the correct length & size already. You also have problems with the reversing light hitting the gearbox body mounts. I always fitted the gearbox to the engine, then letting the back of the box down enough so you could fit the reversing light. I'd then jack the gearbox up into the car. A few taps with a ballpein hammer to the front of the body mount can help, too. This is on the right hand side, obviously.

Yes, they bolt straight up to the engine. But not to the gearbox crossmember.

Sorry bout that, didn't mean to worry you bout the swap. Getting the box in is a lot easier than some other swaps. You don't have to fit the reversing light switch, or clearance the transmission tunnel. If you can get that gearbox crossmember from BProjects that'd be great, but somebody like Stuart Wilkins at SWMotorsport would probably be able to make you something that'd work & mail it to you. To me a true bolt in is where you don't have to modify anything, like fitting an A15 into a 120Y or Sunny. Fitting the 5 speed is very easy, but there is some modification needed. The number for SWR is 02-4577-2400 or www.swmotorsport.com.au.

There are 4 different Datsun 5-speeds that bolt up to A-series engines. Each is a little different in how they are fitted. See http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawi ... -speeds#Swap_Instructions
