#1 Just for interest?
Davo1200 Posted on: 2002/9/8 11:15
Hey everyone! Just was reading thru the last few posts and one thing came to mind. How many people have theres 1200s completly working ,fully operational and registered and used on a daily or weekly basis? Or are we continuly fixing and trying to better our 1200's by updating and making the 1200 stand out as a versitile, tough, allrounder piece of machinery? So i know most of us have had more than one 1200 at a time or one that were working on.

So what is the ratio of working 1200s to work in progress 1200's?

Im still work in progress and will be for a little longer.

Just a thought.

Scott

I pretty much left off whatever wasnt needed to drive, register, and insure the car. Now, I drive it almost everyday. Little by little, I'm adding things and redoing others. Mostly I'm still sweeking the carbs and taking care of reliability and safety issuses.
I cant have this car dead in my garage for a long time, I have other cars that need love too.

Hey Davo, your question is a good one. I sat here for a while and tried to work out when I last "drove" one of my coupes and I realised it's over 15 months ago !! I have owned a 1200 coupe of some description since I was 17 , 20 yrs ago now but now it seems I have become a 1200 collector... My GX is supposed to be my daily driver but until it's finished I'm driving my 1965 MGB roadster which I've owned since I was 15 !! The 1st 1200 was supposed to be my driver to keep the miles down on the MG. But I got hooked on the awesome handling and easily achieved power from the brilliant A series engine which even in standard form would probaly blow my MG away. You've made me feel guilty and I must get off my arse and finish my road coupe.

Hey Davo, how have you been? It's been a long time since we chatted in email about our 1200's. I think it's been like 4 or 5 years since we started corresponding through email (errrnstak@hotmail.com). Anyway, when we were first talking you were fixing up and painting that black coupe that you got rid of. How many do YOU have now? I've been in and out of a few 1200's since then. Right now I've only got one that's in really nice shape that I drive everyday. Of course the same engine and hard to find parts have filtered their way down from all the other 1200's I've owned to this one. I bought this one last March for $2000 and it had 68,000 original miles, now it has 99,000, so you could say I drive it quite a bit. Luckily I've got another car that has taken some of the pressure off the Datsun lately, and it's almost equally as fun to drive! It's a 1969 Buick Sport Wagon; a classic full size 9 passenger station wagon that weighs 4,865 pounds, quite the opposite of the little 1200! What makes it fun to drive is that it is a total sleeper! It has a 455 cubic inch (7.5 liter?) engine that's got over 400 horsepower. Everybody at the drag strip loves it (unless they get beat by it) cause it still runs 14.5 @ 94mph. This Friday I'm going to get it to run 13's with a new aluminum intake, stripped out back seats, advanced timing, race gas, and slicks. Can't wait!

Put me down for work in progress. I used to daily drive my coupe until it got written off. Thats one of the down sides of daily driving, putting up with other peoples bad driving.

Now I have the spare coupe in the garage getting worked on. Just been doing some body work at the moment, looking at prices of rollcages etc. This coupe will not be daily driven as it will be a full time rally car.

I have finally got my daily driver/parts chaser/tow vehicle sorted out. Its my XB Ford ute. Plenty of power for hauling parts but with the power comes $$$ for the fuel bill :( The way I saw it was that I needed a daily driver (couldnt be the rally car) and something to carry parts and things for a service crew. Learnt to drive in a similar ute aswell, love the big ol Fords!

Well,
My ute is strictly a 1/2 Day or day job's only. On weekends etc. I havent got into anything big yet but no dought I will one day.

I dont like the idea of my wife driving me to work in our VR SS at 5am !! she isnt at her best first thing in the morning.

Regards
Andrew

My 1200 is my only car, (I'm still only 18!) uni doesn't allow me to give the Datto the full attention it deserves. I'm the first owner not to garage it so i'm a wee bit worried that it's deteriorating before my eyes.
Still drive it almost every day, 10,000 miles in 6 months, with no major mechanical work! Not bad for a NZ$300 (US$125) car!
