#1 Alternator
Lobster Posted on: 2002/10/19 10:01
Hello,
Hows it going?

That's good to hear.

Anyway enough with the niceties...

I have put a muiltimeter on my battery terminals and I get like 12 or so and then when I start the car I still get 12. Shiouldn't I be getting like 14 or something?
This means that my alternator is rooted. Correct?

Well anyway if I want to replace it I want to replace it with something a bit meatier as I will probably be putting an amp and sub in the car as well as an alarm and central locking. SO I am wondering if I can just get an alternator out of a bluebird or skyline and put it and and change the wiring over? Would this work?
If so what alternator could I use?

get one out of an EA Falcon, gives 75-85amp, its easy to mount and lines up nicely and has the same size pulley as the 1200 one, it means ditching your regulator cause the new one has an internal one but basically all you do is wire it to the positive on you battery

Nope. It might mean something is wrong, but doesn't tell what.

Most likely cause: voltage regulator. Next, alternator. But it could be a wiring problem.

If you want to test it, first check the voltage with the engine at 1200 rpm. If it isn't over 13.5, there is a problem. You can bypass the regulator, if it goes over 13.5, the regulator (or wiring for it) is bad.

You shouldn't need a meatier alternator. The central locking and alarm doesn't take any power from the alternator, since you generally use these while the motor's off. The subwoofer, unless it's a high-watt unit won't need it either ... maybe someone else can state at which stereo wattage you'd need a bigger alternator.

How do you remove the regulator? Is it just a matter of unplugging it?

And I have always wanted a bigger alternator as well. These Datsun ones I have replaced too many times. Thought I might try something else.
Thisfalcon one sounds lieka good idea though..

just wondering if any of the kiwis on this page know any of the guys responsible for this page :

http://members.tripod.com/~teamdatsun/

I really need to know what type of subaru alternators they use on their 1200s!
and ALL FOUR email addresses on their page are stuffed!!

to be honest i paid to have mine wired up, and im pissed that i did cause looking at it they did hardly anything and charged $75, but basicalyy the regulator is totally removed and the old wires have been reused to link the positive on the alternator to the positive on the battery, ill double check what the other wires are doing tommorow and tell you in better detail

This is one that i should be able to answer and not stuff up!
Plus I am not thinking of pizza at the monent atleast for now anyway!
Lobster and 1200rallycar regarding wiring the EA Falcon alternator.
I haven't worked on a EA for a while but I am sure it is the kind with an RE60 internal regulator ( this has an injector style plug! )
If it is! you need to run power from the battery to the big battery terminal on the alternator. (1200rallycar you say on yours the electrician left the old wires! If this is so take it back and get them to put atleast 8mm thick wire for this. As to make the alternator swap wurth it , you need the thicker wire to supply the higher current if at any time the alternator has to charge at its peak! )
Now to the injector plug! If you look on the regulator on both sides of the plug will be a letter ( can't remember what side which letter is on!) One letter will be L - this means warning light from the dash. So find from the old reg wiring the wire thats runs to this light and connect to this side of the injector plug! The other letter will be an S - this means signal! This wire is to give the alternator a signal as to what the battery voltage is! On the ford this wire is only powered when the key is in the on position! You can find this wire also in the old regulator wiring! but an easier way and better way is to just conncet this to the battery positive terminal on the alternator!( Both of these wire can use the old factory wires or new 3mm wire! no larger is needed!)
( You might think this means the alternator is always on but without the key in the on position the warning light will not have power to its other side! and this is what is needed to start the regulator! )
If this is not the kind of alternator 1200rallycar is talking of! the only other one has a 005 regulator and this only needs power from the battery ( still 8mm is prefered) and the warning light wire!
( Both of these are Bosch Regulators )
If it is a different alternator to these! write what kind it is and I will try and get back to you!

Wow.
Not thinking about pizza?
I just went back to working at pizza hut because I can't find any proper office jobs, so I am always thikning about pizza... It sucks.
Anyway...

Umm yeah do you know how the alternator is mounted onto the engine? I don't supose it would fit in the same mount? be good if it would though...

Thanks for that last repsonse. I'll have to reread it a few mroe times to understand though because I am dumb.

Wahts the bet that an EA falcon alternator is worth more than an EA falcon?

Firstly do you wanna swap jobs? I like thinking about pizza!
Yeah regarding how it is mounted: from memory it is very similar, but not sure as belive it or not I haven't worked on an EA for quite a while now! Don't know why but maybe the local council has band them from the road! lol! Plus I am trying to get out of cars! They make working on mine a tedious task! But should be straight forward to make a braket anyway ( that is if you have the tools ( welder etc.) ? ) But I will leave this one to 1200rallycar as he can look at his own car and give the right answer!
Regarding price: An auto electrician should be able to supply a reco one on exchange basis for round $130-$150 12months warranty. But being your exchange will be a 1200 alternator they may charge a bit more. ( each place is different! ) You could buy it new but the price difference is not worth it! as reco is like brand new anyway! ( new is round $250-$400 still only 12months warranty )
Plus if an electrician does reco one for you, while it is apart you can take the housings and paint them to match your car or engine!
(It's not compulsory though! To each his own I say!)
Anyway Check Ya!,
