Alternator Capacitor/Condensor?
crumb
Posted on: 2014/9/17 11:12
I am having trouble finding an alternator capacitor/condensor, i knocked mine off awhile back and now need to replace it as i am having issues with my tacho. It is a Bosch EE 14v3 alternator, i found lists of parts but none that cant tell me what the capacitor is. Even if someone could tell me what the size of the capacitor should be and i will just buy a standard one the right size and install it.
Thanks.

I'm sure I've got one I can spare in the shed. The actual value probably isn't critical. An ignition condenser (capacitor)off the dizzy would likely do the job to.
If I remember right it's for noise suppression and probably the bigger the better (with diminishing returns). I think the brushes on the rotor cause the electrical noise. One of the elec engs I work with would probably know. (Beside the point I guess.)

I will go to jaycar and buy a capacitor and try it out, when then engine gets to approx 3500 the tacho needle jumps all over the place. That's after I have installed new positive, negative and run the signal cable away from all others.

Every time I've had tachometer needle jumping issues it's been fixed by new spark plug wires. Bad wires don't dump the spark energy from the coil into the spark plugs as well causing the tach to double trigger.
I've had best luck with the NGK wires.

I've had flickering when the capacitor on the points was on the way out. Didn't figure that out till it failed (shorted) and blew a fuse. Damn intermittent problems....
Most Auto shops will have the type that mounts with a screw. A neat trick I learned for checking leads is to pop the bonnet in the dark and look for flashes. You can also just check the resistance of the lead. Or just swap them and see if the problem goes away.

the alt capacitor will in no way affect the tacho
its for noise supression only and just knocks the peaks off the alt output id b looking elsewhere bud

Well i have installed the condenser on the alternator and as mentioned it did nothing, i have replaced the leads, i have run in new cables to ensure good connections, i have tired running the signal cable from the negative side of the coil separate from all other cables.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Yep, ran a new earth. Took Positive from back of kill switch.
Starting to think its a bad tacho, It is SAAS so not the most expensive but didn't think it would be that bad. You can view topic.
