#1 60A 5 sp gearbox rebuild
thaifrog Posted on: 2014/12/25 13:19
Sad person that i am... i am spending Christmas rebuilding my 60A gearbox.
I have the instructions and have got to the "gently tap the front transmission case with a soft hammer to release it"stage...
i got it to release (took more than a gentle tap !) and i can get it as far as the picture, about 1/4".. but it wont go further, it feels like there is something mechanical preventing it.

i dont want to break anything...
Anyone have any suggestions/advice ?

Thanks
Andy

Oh, and Happy Christmas

Should the main input shaft remain with the front cover when it is removed? or should it remain attached to the main shaft ?

Looking at the pictures i would expect the maininput shaft to remain fixed to the front cover, but then why do the instructions say to remove the circlips from the main bearing ?

the cases split leaving the two gear cluster shafts along with the shift forks attached to the center plate, I'll try and attach a link to a photo bucket album of my 60A rebuild. Its pretty complete - hope it helps.

I do think there's a pin or something that holds the housing to the cluster but cant remember...look thru all the trans pic's as I was pretty methodical in taking themto remind me where everything went!

There's a really good exploded view photo on the table that shows all the parts laid out in order of how they came off the shafts. Its a bit tricky doing one of these, take your time and be careful - it'll be fine. Pay clos attention to snap rings, and hoe the syncro's go together and on the shafts as well, I recall them being confusing....

if you go to this link from Rivergate at the bottom of the page or slightly above it is a pdf link to a Nissan factory 60A 5speed transmission manual - VERY HELPFUL - use it, you'll need it.

Good day, as i can remember from helping my dad with his 5spd, you have to put in in reverse then it splits. good luck.

Well, ended up drifting the main input bearing a little bit, didnt need too much force then everything came apart as per the manual.
Had a good look and listen to everything , replaced the main input and the mainshaft end bearing, then put it back together again.
filled with oil and put it through the motions and it all seems nice and quiet and goes into gear nicely.

Next step putting it into the car....

Next problem ...
i took out the engine and box today and found that the old 60L gearbox has a different sized transmission mount foot, there is about 15mm difference between the two...(60A and 60L)

The PO who installed the 60L welded in some very substantial steel supports to suit the 1200 transmission mount. So today i had to cut those out and tomorrow design a new mount , ive got a sample B310 mount that i will use and try to get a new one for the final fitment.

funny how one thing leads to another... trying to resist the urge to give the engine bay a rub down and repaint or else i'll be off the road for too long...

I had to fab a new mount for the 60a to fit the 1200 tunnel, made a cardboard template first ..... It all takes time.

It has offset tabs to make up the distance to the mounts
