What direction is force applied to engine mounts? If engines turn the crankshaft clockwise (when facing flywheel) then would the torsional force pull the right hand mount upwards and the left mount downwards?

If your crankshaft turns clockwise, yes the right hand mount will be pulled up and the left mount will be pushed down. But please, please understand that the engine does not turn the other way when the car is in reverse. That happens at the gearbox so your driveshaft will rotate backwards. The engine keeps going one way, all the time.

Engine direction is specified from the front of the engine. Nearly all automotive engines turn clockwise, the most common exception being Honda FWD engines

Right/left car parts, including engine mounts, are specified from the perspective of the driver. Only engine rotation being specified the opposite way as far as I can recall

I'm not sure if an A-series engine would ever pull the mount upwards. At full torque, it tends to lift the engine up, but I don't think it's enough to overcome the weight of the engine. What causes the mounts to fail is more about the vibrations

The force is applied in 6 directions, 3 components of linear force and 3 moments. Think of it this way, vibration and g forces shake and twist it every way imaginable. Long term average force is just the downward pull of gravity since most motors are not running all the time.

Lamb you have a good point, I just got a bit distracted when he specified about rotation when having the car moving forwards. Had a mini rant sorry XD

Engines rotate clockwise and that is the reason why oval tracks race counterclockwise.

Also consider the torque reaction when powering on. It will be anti-clockwise and try to tear the LH mount off the crossmember.

When we raced the Datsun 1200 with the original engine rubber mounts, we would often break the right hand side mount clean off. We quickly switched over to the 1974-78 B210 rubber mount and never had problems. Peter
