Seems you can't really get them off without them breaking. It's almost like they are moulded on there.
Don't know if this helps but I shortened my handbrake for better gearstick clearance on my CA18 conversion and ended up going to Bunnings and buying a small alloy draw knob which fitted perfectly and looks more solid than the original plastic one. However, I did use a tap and die set to create a thread on the rod that the knob fits on.

Mine attaches to the end of the handbrake cable and tensioned with a spring.
There are notches in the cable that hold it in.

Yes mine was the same, but because I chopped about 25mm off the main tube I also cut back that rod where the button was, which got rid
of the two little humps and left me with a straight piece of rod to put a thread on. Then because the knob was screwed on, it retained the spring behind it. Anyway just a suggestion that may or may not be to you liking. But if you do find an original replacement I'd be curious to know how it goes on. Does it twist on like the wiper knobs on the dash or does it glue on ?

The Rod Button screws onto the Release Rod. In his photo, the brass thing is normally glued into the Rod Button, then it screws onto the rod
You can obtain one from another 1200, get the handbrake lever assembly but just use the button

I can't figure out a way to remove the small cable does anybody know if it's possible? The solution would be to replace it with a threaded cable and that way I can use any button I want
