Steering column and box

Hey guys,
is the steering column and box in a 79 ute 3 speed or 4 speed?

3speed gearboxes were only fitted to some STD 1970-1973 Datsun 1200s. The column used with a 3-speed has a column-shift mechanism attached instead of the floor shifter which the 4-speed uses

Thanks DD I thought the speed was something to do with the how many turns from lock to lock of the steering wheel.

Hey guys,
does anyone know how long a steering column and box usually lasts for?i have checked mine and there is no play and nothing looks worn in the box.

Usually last the life of the car. My last sedan was 40+ years old and still working, though with a little play in the wheel (35mm instead of the brand-new 25mm play). My first 1200 did 400,000 km and 28 years old with about the same amount of wear
