Wiring in rev counter

Hi guys,
Quick question regarding wiring in a factory rev counter. With the ignition wire do I have to cut the wire and join each end of the wire to the rev counter wires so this makes one circuit, or can I strip the ign wire slightly and solder the rev counter wires on with out cutting the ign wire? Sorry if it is a dumb question but have been told both way are ok but not keen on frying my wiring if i do it wrong...

You've been told both ways because there are two different rev counters: 1) original 1970-1973 tachometer interrupts the IGN circuit 2) late-model 1200 tachometer does not
If you have an original tachometer, it fits an original 1200 wiring harness without cutting the harness ![]() Late-model tachometer (no wiring loop) connects to coil- terminal ![]()

Ok thanks, mine has the loop, but a lot of the wires were stripped out from the dash so the original wire to connect to isnt there. So ok to just tap into the ign(black/white) wire?

Yes, just cut the dash BW wire somewhere, and run each end to the tachometer BW loop
Most B110 (japan, usa) have the cut already existing, but most 1200 utes don't have it. Standard sedans might not have it. The cut is a pull-apart section Attach file: 5043.jpg (36.89 KB)![]()

OK so I installed it over the weekend but the needle does not move when car is running.. It is all hooked up correctly, so assuming gauge is faulty. I have a spare I can use but is the a way to check it does work before pulling dash out and re-installing the second gauge?
