Well just finished rebuilding my 5 speed. This was my first transmission rebuild and was surprisingly easy with the service manual. All the gears shift nicely and its ready to go in my MG Midget. Great little gearbox that Datsun made way back in the 80s. Looking forward to installing it in my MG to give it a much better ride. But first need to put my A15 together. I'll be asking questions along the way and expect to receive great feedback as usual.

A gynecologist was getting sick of his job and decided that he needed a career change. He'd always enjoyed tinkering with engines so thought he'd become a mechanic. So he went along to mechanics school and the final test was to strip the engine completely and reassemble it - obviously back into perfect working order. So our gynecologist friend did the test and anxiously awaited the result. The day he received the results he got quite a surprise, he got 150%! He quickly phoned the instructor and queried the mark. The instructor said "no no that's right. First I gave you 50% for stripping down the engine - - a very thorough job. Next I gave you 50% for reassembling it - a fantastic job really, and then I gave you a 50% bonus for doing it all through the muffler.

Ha. Well if it wasn't so expensive to ship...i might. My spare 63 series will be staying here in the US. No use for it at the moment. Does the 63 fetch more money than the 60 down under?

Sure do they are fairly rare.it's probably cheaper to fit the Toyota T50 so much stronger

While I had purchased an auto bell housing with an eye towards installing a Ford type 9 or rocket box but I've since started down the path of installing a 63 series 5 speed.

There is an alternate second gear for the 63 series that was installed in the Z20 powered cars. It's 1.922 which would make the ratios similar to the mid-close ratio 56 series 4 speed. I believe I actually found a dealer with the parts.

Everything else on the car is overbuilt, H190 rear end, ZX brakes, rally spec cage and so the oversize box seems appropriate.

Now if it were in a Spridget because I'm an idiot and suffer from Chapmen disease I'd want an A12 coupled to the 56 series box. Saving 28 pounds is worth listening to the motor turning 5000 rpm on the freeway.

I am setting up the midget to be a cruiser and not necessarily revving to 5k. Uncertain how the stock differential can handle the A series power. The individual axle shafts have been known to get distorted and even break over time. I have seen reinforced shafts and may explore that if it becomes a problem. Didn't realize the a12 was that much lighter than the a15. Will save that engine for my next spridget project. The midget tach shows 5500 yellow line and 6000 redline, what is it for the A15?

A15 has same redline: 6000 RPM (stock A12 can rev to 6400 before valve float, or to 8500 if the valve springs are upgraded). 5000 RPM is not even in the yellow zone and is useful for everyday acceleration

Correction: A12 redline is 6400 RPM




w/dual valve springs is 6800 RPM

A15 redline is 6250 on the B310 tachometer, W/dual valve springs A15 is 6800
