Thinking of putting my Lsd with 4.4 gears in my
alloy center. I know the h165 can handle around 225 lb torque So the question is. . How much can the alloy h165 handle ??

DD knows but recall not being much
better stick to cast iron to keep that lsd jewel housed well if you are planning some big hp/tq etc

The cast iron H65 can handle 225lbs but the alloy I recall
somewhere almost 1/3 less due to the caps being too soft. Its listed in the tech wiki the cast iron h165 is only 10 lbs heavier which is bugger all. More of a difference between H190 alloy and cast edited: diff inches max. torque capacity Alloy below H145 5.71 ~100 lb. ft. H150 5.91 ~125 lb. ft. cast iron below H165 6.50 ~225 lb. ft. H190 7.49 ~285 lb. ft.

Feral said his cast alloy H190 was just enough
for his race L series and Dave on Ozdat with a beautifully restored road/track 260C L28 210hp has no problem with his alloy setup however the smaller H145/50/65 have very soft caps holding the axle bearings, even my suzuki k6 660cc here I rehoned/ringed recently has beefier main caps as did the G13B & G16b (1720cc) I took you to see your old exa at that workshop that time. That van only made 112hp atw and 950kg yet had an iron diff no bigger than a H150 like the 4wd kei trucks here which are all 660cc. note: I edited the chart above as you can see there is a great gap between 150mm to 165mm versions. I never seen a cast iron H145 so must be that those figures are for cast alloy units and surely iron H150 on some late 1200 utes take more Lb. ft. H145 100 vs 125 H150 but the alloy casting gets weaker if you saw how flimsy the caps are with no effort of reinforcement even on the H165 version. I believe on more than 150lb ft for the alloy 165. Cast Iron I know of an adelaide daily, drag, track & drift bluebird with sr20det with over 400lb ft that is running a cast iron H190 with LSD with no issues. Likely it wouldnt survive in a body over 1200kg with such a mad driver but youll prob be 950kg all done which is enough for H165 Iron unit. 225 lb ft is a really good figure for such a lil unit, surely jap metallurgy at its best.

Nick I weighed the H190 in my car and from memory it came in at 96lbs. Note I have an alloy center and alloy drums.

96lbs thats pretty light, I recall my H165 alloy units about 42kgs.
Never weighed a H165 cast iron diff setup but I was dismayed when weighing a H165 alloy carrier diff, Stumpy R30 box was 90kg vs a fwd honda Integra LSD factory 1988 unit was less than halve that.

I've never seen a light alloy H145. Only cast iron H145. The alloy units apparently only came in Wagons
H150 only came in 1977-1982 B310 and is only fractionally stronger than H145. A 5.7 inch ring gear is not very big

Maybe Americans received the stronger heavier units
as in Oz never seen an iron H145. Pprob a good upgrade in light cars like the 1k as they put little stress on running gear after engine and box. I ran my a 13b and rx5 box using a H150 locked alloy diff from a 1k ute for the gearing and had no issues but no mindless burnouts just swift fun driving. You can view topic.
