just brought the cams book today and i have seen that the minium weight for 1600 to 2000 ltr 3j improved production is 1095kg's is there any way around this because i am very much doubting that my 1200 coupe with an l20 and a cage is going to be above 1000 kg

couldnt you just add ballast, this would also help in balancing the car if done right on the scales. this defexts the purpose of an engine swap but im guessing some of the cars would be struggling to get low enogh in weight to be of any threat to a 1200, with a l20

first,are you doing race meetings with it,or just supersprinting it.i've seen them wieght cars at race meetings,but not at supersprints.the ballast idea is best,as you can distribute the weight low down in the car,but first weight the car at a public weightbridge,to find out how close you are.roofing lead is good for ballast,as it's malleable.

is that one of the million things that give you cancer?

I never knew that there was weigth restriction for improved production 3J !!! my 1200 with CA18det runs in over 3000cc and weighed in at 880kg with full tank of juice. I plan to get it closer to 800kg but once its all back together running in sports sedan class so i can run slicks and no turbo restrictor. Most of the places I race in supersprints and hillclimbs are pretty lax with the rules even state rounds arent that bad unless you flog some old mate that dosnt like been beaten and tries to find something illegal with your car.

They've been talking about bringing in this class weight system for a while now, but from what I understand I think it is only applied to the 'late model' cars from '86 onwards at this stage. Haven't seen the 2003 CAMS manual yet though...

Besides, as a couple of the guys have said, the only place this will ever really be enforced is for circuit racing. Hillclimbs and sprints will be fine. At least I hope so.. otherwise, I'll take the same route as Andrew. Get some slicks and race as a sport sedan - there's no way I'm adding over 200kg of ballast to my car.

What's the min weight for <1600cc?

Hopefully the 1200's secret weapon (lightweight chassis) won't get out into the racing community at large ... there could be a rash of complaints.

I wonder why more people aren't aware how important this is? General public at large thinks "heavy" = "safe".

with under 1600cc classes can i have a L16 with bore 1mm oversize making it 1635cc??
and does anyone know that class weight??

Ok I have the 2002 Cams racing manual and here are the weights.....

17.6 Minimum Racing weights for naturally aspirated front wheel drive vehicles, based on the swept volume of the engine: Up to 1400 cc 875kg
1401 to 1600 cc 965kg
1601 to 2000 cc 1045kg
2001 to 3000 cc 1175kg
3001 to 4000 cc 1285kg
4001 to 6000 cc 1405kg
For rear-wheel drive, add 50 kg; for four-wheel drive 90 kg. In consideration of minimum Racing Weights, all supercharged vehicles of or above 1200cc swept volume, of actual swept volume shall be treated as having a swept capacity of 2001 to 3000cc, those below 1200cc shall be treated as 1601 to 2000cc vehicles.
