#1 Fuel tank question...
sling Posted on: 2003/5/29 2:01
I have a lot of rust that has suddenly broken loose in the fuel tank. I have removed the drain plug and tried to flush it out with gasoline...Not much luck...It will still plug up a fuel filter in about 10 seconds..

I have removed the fuel tank from the car. Any suggestions on how to clean it out??

And once it is cleaned out isn't there some kind of sealer one can apply??

there is a company that makes a gas tank sealer that coats the inside of the gas tank.

Otherwise, on a warm day..
Pull the tank out of the car and drain the fuel into a bucket..or somewhere else safe. Use some pantyhose to filter it as you transfer it. Fishnet stockings aren't appropriate for filtering.
Pull out the sender unit, and blast out the tank with soapy water and a garden hose..then flush with metho..Let it dry.

Then pour in some rust treatment stuff..It probably only need to coat the bottom. scrub around inside where you can, it makes the rust treatment work better.

Let it dry as per rust treatment instructions.

Rinse out with metho to get any strange residue out. Then put the tank back in the car and fill up the tank (To minimise petrol contamination concentration).

That's how I fixed mine.

I used an Australian rust kill product called "Emertan" Which is a Tanin Phosphate solution.

i seem to remember something about hangind a metal chain into the tank and banging it around as much as possible to break any rust free,

could be totally wrong but

i was told the best place to get the tank treatment was a motorbike accessory shop,as they carry this sort of stuff.you could always take the tank along to a radiator repair shop & ask if they can steam clean the tank, then treat the tank with the rust treatment.i recently got the fuel tank in my sunny serviced & baffled for $140 at parramatta radiator repairs (shameless free plug),but they're on the wrong side of the world for you.what's even worse is the rust that'll pass straight through 2 filters & clogs up the jets(or in my case the injectors).

Well I'm up and running again!! Pulled the tank, tumbled a chain inside the tank to break free any rust that might be hanging around. Took the tank to the car wash and cleaned it out with high pressure soap and water and then a rinse. Let dry in the hot sun for 24 hrs...Then treated the tank with Red-Kote sealer and let cure for 32 hrs. Works fine now....Thanks for the info guys!!
