Diff for CA18 in 1200 Coupe

Howdi all........
Wondering if anyone can give me some ideas about diff's and ratio's that would work good for track work. CA18 is the making the grunt, turning the shaft is a Quaife 5 speed with straight cut gears (ratios are pretty much standard) but cant seem to settle on what rear end set up is going to turn the black round things ????? Any Ideas ????????? Cheers Peddler

An H165 from a B120 ute is what your after, they're the right width and are an easy transplant. Rumour has it they'll take 300hp which is plenty.
Ratio wise, well really depends on the track/circuit but the a good starting point would be the standard ratio ex the ute which is 4.111:1 and go up or down from there .....

If you want to go bigger you could use either a VN (or similar) commodore diff as they are cheap and plenty of different ratios, axles and have decent size discs on the back. Needs change of stud pattern.
Series 3 bluebird diff very cheap, same stud pattern, big axles and discs, i don't know how strong they are, but they are alot easier to fit than a commodore diff. Or for a super strong diff you could go a Hilux item but they are heavy (like the commodores) and only have drum brakes and negate a stud pattern change.

If all else fails you could go a 9 inch, like a CA18DET 1200 coupe in my area.

Thanks Lad's it seems that the nine inch is an option that a few fellas have idvised me on although having used them in the past with V8's etc i recon they are a little on the heavy sid eof the scale. One question, what is a B120 Ute diff like standing up to around 275hp ? and are there different ratios available of the shelf ??

I'm with Brent, I'd go for the 165 too. First it's the right width, it's light and it is relatively strong. In a circuit car that is lightened it should hold up fine. But with all the diffs around being old, I would carefuly check the axles and carrier for cracks and have them shot peened to relieve any built up stresses and make them more durable.Also check the housing for straightness. To many "experts" dismiss the smaller diffs as weak, when their experience is with parts that have been abused or just plain worn out. The Borg Warner( Falcon/ Commodore) is a good axle , a little heavier but low ratios 4:1:1 and lower are difficult to get. The 9" is a awesome diff but really is overkill in all but the most serious drag cars receiving massive shock loadings in launch situations.

Drag racers in the U.S. often use 521 truck diffs., shorten the axles & reposition the wheel studs. I'd like to try the 1982 200SX (Gazelle/Silvia) rear axle which has discs and just needs shortening & it is 4x4.5.

ok, where can i get my grubby little hands on one of these 165's ? Sounds like ti is the way to go and i also touched base with a lad in my local area and he also tells me that it is a good versitile option !

i was led to believe that the 165 centre is 300hp + but the axles arent that good?? can anyone convince me with stories of their own experience with a 165 behind some big power?

Funniest thing we should be talking about diff in CA18DET powered Cars, my mate snapped his right axel and tore huge chucks outta everywhere with his locker he had in. His Ute was dyno'd at 220hp at the rear wheels
