#1 i need help with an engine carby combo that will sound rorty and old!!
mikali Posted on: 2003/8/13 7:22
hey guys,

i know its not possible to get a four cylinder to sound exactly like a mad v8 or v6 but i want a unique sound, i dont really know what webers sound like or a holley (yep im retarded), i want either im thinkin an L- or A- series motor, larger capacity would be better im assuming.

do u guys have any suggestions as to what cam to use, webers or holley?, and what else i need to do to the motor to make it sound mean and lumpy?. any sites that have the sound ur talking about on file would be GREAT!!

Thanks!

mik.

You want webers with minimal filters and a lumpy cam. That's how you get the rorty weber note happening. A holley or other regular downdraft is muffled by it's restricted air paths. My brother old 1600 with L20 (with 2.4 crank/pistons) sounded like the business. He was running twin 48 webers.

However, a CA18DE with a filter sock on the end of the AFM sounds very similar. You also need to get the exhaust note right too. Always run a resonator, otherwise it will just be loud, but not nice.

oh and whats the deal with the L20 and Z20 are they an easy fit? theres not much info anywhere on them.

As for cam..anything lumpier than stock is the go..but almost all cams will mean you lose low down driveability, which is real important on a daily driver. I said CA18DE..normally aspirated. I used to have one, and it sounded nice, I used the standard airbox, with the atmosphere side chopped out for more air input and more intake noise output
The Zxx stuff is too hard to find. Get a worked L18 from a 1600, the wilder the better. And fit that with a Stanza 5 speed. Read through some of the L Series in a 1200 articles. Starting a transplant with only the intake noise as an inspiration point, is not a good idea. Get the basics right and then go for the "nice to haves". A car in the garage with no motor is not a car. I know I don't need to tell you this.

But it's good to see you back into Dattos again. (Not that you ever lost interest).

I'm in California this week. Posting from my Hotel in San Jose. It's about 1am. I'll check out my project when I return on Sunday/Monday (It should be painted by month end). I'm still trying my best to get it finished by November for Adelaide DatNats.

Still got the SSS, I haven't driven it for 3 weeks or so..and Haven't seen my white sedan for nearly 6 weeks ..been too busy with moving house and work. I need to change that.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread, by talking about me. Time for sleep, gotta drive up to San Francisco after work tomorrow afternoon for dinner.
