Japan - Where should I go?
jack
Posted on: 2003/11/8 13:32
Hey, i am applying as an assistant english teacher in Japan. I am interested to know where i should nominate to be posted? There are a few people on the site living over there, what are your thoughts?
No hard and fast notions of 'yeh i'll be there come next July' but i am very keen to get the job. Talked to a few people and heard lots of good things (and quite a few really bad things) about going. The program is targeted at rural areas but i am really pretty clueless about what to write down!?!?! Any help?

Oh, the prefecture and designated city option are:
Hokkaido Prefecture Shiga Prefecture Sapporo City Kyoto Prefecture Aomori Prefecture Kyoto City Iwate Prefecture Osaka Prefecture Miyagi Prefecture Osaka City Sendai City Hyogo Prefecture Akita Prefecture Kobe City Yamagata Prefecture Nara Prefecture Fukushima Prefecture Wakayama Prefecture Ibaraki Prefecture Tottori Prefecture Tochigi Prefecture Shimane Prefecture Gunma Prefecture Okayama Prefecture Saitama Prefecture Hiroshima Prefecture Saitama City Hiroshima City Chiba Prefecture Yamaguchi Prefecture There are options for the major cities but i was told they prefer to post young people in rural areas - sounds better to me anyhow.

Basically anywhere in Japan is awesome, even the "rural" areas really aren't all that rural. I actually have friends in Saitama that are doing the exact same thing! Saitama is about 30km from me, not too far from the "city". Many of those places I have never been to and I'm not familiar with, but Hokkaido is way north and cold, Chiba is basically right near Tokyo, Nara, Kobe, and Kyoto are really cool, but further away. That's about as much as I could tell you about it, you will love it where ever you go. Yokohama seems to be where a lot of the classic car places are, most particularly our beloved Datsun shops are around there. Keep us all posted what happens!

AS expected my location preferences didn't really mean that much in the scheme of things. I am being posted in Kumayama (town), Okayama-Ken (Prefecture/State/Province). My travel guide classes it as 'western honshu' and describes the capital (Okayama city) as a 'modern' city surrounded by glimpses of the past. I can't find any information on Kumayama town.

Hi guys. I have been in Tokyo since sunday morning and am moving onto Okayama-ken tomorrow. Thursday i am off to Seto where i will be living for the next 12 months! I will be working in Kumayama at a Junior High most of the time and making visits to the 3 elementry schools in the area.
The Keio Plaza in Shinjuko is the absolutely lush place they have housed all 1500 or so new JETs in the program. The majority are from the US but Australia has about 100 or so particiipants. When I get some more time I'll post some pics. You can view topic.
