a lot of people have been telling me that the fj20 engine is a lot stronger and better than the ca18 and the sr20. at the summernats i saw an fj20 punch out 460 horses on the dyno with no internal mods just turbocharged and intercooled. how hard is it to drop these little power plants into the 1200 ute. does it require much modification to the firewall or the engine bay

FJs are an awsome and strong arse motor, rattly as all hell but can definately hold together for some serious hp. I'm a ca fan which are also a super tuff little motor that when you spend some money on them(like all motors) they can turn the dyno pretty hard also. The sr's arent bad many people jumped on the band wagon with them cause of the extra hp they made out of the box, but you can spend some money on them to make them go, but the cheap design nissan put into the rocker arms is a little holden 202 design for me just dont rev them too hard and they might hold together.

the pink 1200 in the photo album is powered by a fj20... It looked like a pretty big job to fit it in, with the battery moved to the tray of the ute & the tunnel expanded to make room for the gearbox. Basically, you can make it fit, with a few modifications...

Apparently the Bluebird with an FJ20DET got 600+ HP at the wheels at 30+psi boost, before the sparkplugs melted in the head in one of the dyno heats.

So the FJs go hard, but they fit badly in a 1200 unless you are prepared to rework your pedalbox, tranmission tunnel, brake system and front panel etc..I don't see the point.

Plus they are lots heavier than a CA18DET.

I don't think any street driven 1200 can deal with more than 300HP at the wheels.

Most 4 cylinder engines at this kind of power, only make this power in a very small rev band, at very high revs.

Plus in most states it requires a lot of work to convince registration authorities.

If you want to only drag race..then go for it. Everyone has different ideas on what they want from their datto.

they're a great engine, but REALLLY heavy, and a real hassle to put in a 1200. They're actually a bit tight in a B310, the 1200 is orders of magnitude tighter!
They're now a bit old, and it's getting harder to get decent parts for them.

I'd go for a CA18 in a 1200 anyday..It just makes for a lot nicer package..

im still trying to figure out this forum, so i am sorry if this ends up in the wrong place. the fj20 bluebird at the nats actually lunched itself cause the dude was pushing 60 odd psi through its lungs. nothing is going to last for very long at that psi.

There is a street legal 120y sedan here in christchurch runing an fj20 . I paseed it once
going the other way ,and by all acounts it is
a LEATHAL weapon .I guess our certification engineers must have bigger balls than yours.
(mind you from what I saw of it , it looked like a well put together car).

i have a 1600 with an fj20 in it as well as my 1200 sedan. when i park em next to each other you can see the size difference in the two engine bays. the fj is a HUGE engine, mine was from a dr30 skyline so it has the bigger intake plenium and i think bigger exhaust manifold for better power but the s12 silvia had smaller manifolds witch may suit a 1200 engine bay. i love the fj, it dosn't have the same sound or feel as other 4cyl turbo engines, its chunkier and feels more brutal under power especialy when the boost is wound up form 8psi to 15
