ok i tried to search the web for the info i found...then lost so i was wondering how tight should the cover over the cam be i no that a book made a mistake and that it must be pretty close to where it shood be so im wondering how many times should the wrench be turned to get it at the right tightness so the seal won't break???

After years of engine heat, the poor gasket will get brittle. It's better if you replace them every 200,000kms or so. The gasket kits for A Series engines is very cheap. At about $35 for a complete set.Use some RTV Blue sealant when fitting, clean all of the surfaces with metho. Torque it down to just hold it finger tight, then 1 more turn, for each bolt, tighten in a pattern, like when you are doing up wheel nuts. The RTV will keep it sealed, and the gasket will flex to take up temperature/vibration differences.

I'm sure there's torque settings around..but most people can't afford an accurate torque wrench anyway.

The spec for the rocker cover screws is in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds. In other words, not very tight.

Basically, if you tighten it so that the cover flange deforms, it is too tight. Then it will leak oil. Make sure you examine the flange before putting it back together. If it is slightly bent down around the fastener holes, hammer it straight again.

An accurate torque wrench is extremely important for re-torquing the head bolts, which is part of a regular tune up (normally, every 12,000 miles). An accurate wrench is not expensive -- you can buy a manual one "bending pointer" type instead of one of the fancy ratcheting type. I think what dattodude meant is that a high-precision torque wrench is expensive. You won't need high precision wrench.

when Im torkin up stuff that cant be too tight I use a 1/4 drive socket set I got for $10 the piddley little ratchet is so small and pathetic that its difficult to overtighten bolts with it. but really common sense should tell you whats tight enough.

(funny saying that , common sense aint all that common these days)

Good point. For the valve cover aka rocker cover you don't want to use even a 1/4 inch socket wrench, that will put too much torque on it.

Use a screwdriver or a nut-driver and use two fingers to tighten it.

Dattodude's idea is probably best: finger-tight all around, then 1 additional turn all around.

Are we sure that he does not mean the timing case?
