hey folks

just wondering, what ever your particular model was sold with is the standard that you must adhere to. eg. if you car was not fitted with seatbelts then you dont have to fit them legally. its the same with emmissions controls as far as I know.
Does anyone know where I can find a listing of what original equimpment came with my datsun 1000 (1969)?
I have belts fitted, but its crude.(a 1/4"bolt thru the b pillar and holes drilled in the floor with big washers!!) Also, on one side, the front right wing has a mirror on it, but the left does not. Not sure?

They are called ADRs (Australian Design Rules).

Your compliance plate (It might not exist) will have a few numbers on it. These numbers relate to "Safety standards" for certain aspects of your car.

For a summary, See the DOTARS - ADR PAGE for more information on them.

I hope this helps.
Chris

Got to love the little 1000's. My "aftermarket" seat belts are held in the B pillar by hacksaw blades. I have no external rear vision mirrors. There ain't no compliance plates either. Engine number on the rego is still the 1000cc??

Surely my car shouldn't pass rego... but it has and continues to...

With regards with the seat belt laws:
1.) All cars on normal rego in SA have to have seat belts for all passengers seated. even if you car did not have seat belts from new!
2.) All cars have to have new seat belts every 7 years!

Just a couple of usless laws to keep you amused! I've never heard of either being enforsed, i've even been pullled over by cops with 6 people in my HK which has only 4 seat belts and not been queried about it.

Another amusing Law: new registration plates must be fitted to all pre 1996 vehicles if purchased post 1997!

I'm surprised they require retro-fitting (car didn't originally come with seat belts). On the other hand, AU could export those used seatbelts to needy countries (like the US) that have a shortage of good belts for older cars.

SA isn't alone on the plate issue: in Washington State we have a new law, we are required to buy new plates if they are more than x years old, even if they look brand new. I guess the police got tired of worn-out plates they couldn't easily read. Solution? Require everyone across the board to pay $14 for new plates

Just remember, we live in a "User pays" society now and the theory is that if you don't pay for it, you don't appreciate it.

Governments all over would like you to appreciate it as much as possible.
