Can people tell me whether it is possible to run a non turbo CA18DE with the DET comp/loom/AFM etc?
I know it probably sounds like a strange thing to do but I need to know.
Also are RWD extractors available?

My first instinct is NO as they DET is set up for the turbo and it creating boost in jenction with the AFM detecting the amount of air getting sucked in, although I could be wrong

Yes.

Look at the loom. The DET uses higher flow injectors that are "low impedance" and need a ballast resistor.

Also the turbo uses a 4 wire 02 sensor. This may make a difference also. (Cutting the red 12v wire to the o2 sensor heater, doesn't affect anything). I have tried to run a DE with a DET computer (by mistake) and it wouldn't run. the only important difference is the size of the injectors.

The ECUs are the same..different fuel maps and a couple of extra outputs. eg. for boost raise for high octane fuel.

maybe the AFMs are different?

I've done a conversion from CA18DE to DET in my datto, and did the wiring myself. There isn't many differences.

RWD extractors will need to be imported or specially made. But the factory manifold is pretty good. Don't bother getting extractors.

Thanks for the reply, so would it then be possible to run the DE with DET injectors or would it run rich? Or can I plug a DE ECU into the DET loom and do away with the injector ballast resistor? It would be much easier if I didn't have to change to loom.
You used to run a DE in your 1200 didn't you? What do you recommend for cost effective performance mods?
By the way that photo of the CA18DE with the gold throttle bodies looks awesome! What are those TBs? Are they mounted onto the remains of the factory intake manifold?
Cheers,
Morgan

As for the Turbo computer, it will probably freak out at not getting boost and probably go into "limp home mode" at revs above 3000. Only clearable by turning off engine, and restarting. I'm trying to think of reasons for why the turbo computer won't work with the non-turbo. The wiring is not much different, and the injectors are the only thing that makes it different.

As for "a little more rich" I'd be thinking clouds of smoke too rich.

But almost all of the wires are the same whether it be DE or DET. See my diags page at http://www.shoeys.com/diag/

I'd really recommend against using the turbo computer on a DE. Try harder to find a DE computer. Even one from a Pulsar EXA, but I "know" they have different pinouts.

For a few hundred dollars you might be able to get someone to tune and rechip the computer for you.

The quad throttle bodies are "injection perfection" product. I took the photo 5-6 years ago. They are mainly aimed at the FWD Pulsar EXA that had the CA18DE. I've got no idea if they are still available.

For my Datto, the CA18DE sounded good and went quite well. Not fantastic but much better than any stock A-series.

The turbo motor made my eyes pop out almost the first time I drove it. These were very exciting days.

Hmmm, sounds like it could get a bit complicated. I don't have the time or the money for this particular project (Mk2 escort rally car) so I'll try and sell the CA18DET gbox loom and ECU and go back to a dirty old ford motor with points and carbutettors.
Not ideal I know but it is only an escort!
Thanks for your help though dattodude!
