It's not the diameter of the WHEEL thats important, it's the outside diameter of the TYRE.
The original 12" tyre measured very close to 550mm in diameter & the 185-60-13 tyres that i run on the front of my car have the same diameter.

The following relates to tyres used on the FRONT of the car only. Rear tyre sizes are much more flexible.

If you start getting too much larger in diameter you start rubbing the tyre on the inner guards in the footwell area. This can be eased by reducing the steering lock, but a tight turning circle was one of the great advantages of our Datsuns, so it's all a matter of ballance.

The smallest size shown in my book for a 16" rim is 205-45-16, it is designed around a 7" rim & measures 590mm in outside diameter. This will likrly cause some problems.
Permitted rim width's for this size range from as narrow as 5-1/2" right out to 8"

My book is a 1988 edition, & more suitable sizes may well have since been invented,... i hope.
Check with your tyre supplier, but remember to find out the outside diameter of the tyre.

[edit]
By using the tyre size calculator, it looks like a 185-40-16 tyre would measure 554mm diameter & would fit nicely on a 5-1/2" rim, although even 6-1/2" would be OK.
Does this size tyre exist? I don't know. Can you buiy this rim size in a correct offset? Don't know that either, but good luck with your quest.

The online tyre size calculator says that these measure 570mm in diameter. Thats a 9mm increase in the radius of this tyre over standard. [18mm larger dia.]

If it works for Demojob, it should work for you too.
How much do these tyres co$t?

At a guess, the tyres outperform the chassis by a factor of,...ummm, ahh, who cares, as long as it looks right.

You have to be careful not to upset the transport boys, last I knew the regulations were(and they change like underpants), the overall diameter of the origional tyre can be changed but only by so much ( increase 15mm or decrease 25mm) and the front and rear tyres may be different widths as long as the front ones are minimum 70% width of the rears.
That was the regulation when I was in the tyre industry about a year ago but dont quote me on it cos like I said they change like jocks.
