I got a load of spares parts free with a Mini Clubman I bought including a brand new carb.

It looks like an HS4 (1 1/2 in SU) but the dash pot does not tapper in at the top, it also has blanking plates and some other attachments that are not on a std HS4.

It has HJ038 - 11 4902 H printed on the float chamber. The carb body has ISO written on it. I guess the 38 part means 38mm?

I think it might be an Hitachi flat top. Does this fit a Datsun?

Here's some photos:

I can see the Hitachi symbol on the fuel inlet cover. The ones made by SU say SU on that cover.

38s are what most Nissans used.

Congratulations.
You have a pair of Hitachi Su's used on the A12GX motors.
They look nice and clean and almost brand new.

Damn.
I wish I was near enough to have bought them.
I bought a spair pair just to clean them and find that the butterflies has been worn on the sides of the shafts about a millimeter.
If you close the butterfly and hold the carb in to the sun, you can see a small amount of sunlight coming in on the sides of the shaft.
The people I talked to said this will cause problems when setting the idle.
I am so pissed.

I've only got one carb, its brand new (been in my garage for a while though)

Do you know how much its worth? ... How much are they to buy new?

You will have trouble setting the idle if your butterfly shaft leaks as some air will get drawn in past the shaft at idle. Not sure about this carb but you can get new bushes for SU carbs.
