Just picked up a 81 1200 ute. Straight and original and want to keep it that way. Looking at
respray and thats about it.

It has a number of lighting problems. Brake lights would not go off. Fixed that.

Headlights come on with light switch only at first position and when high beam selected headlights go out.

I am currently trying to get the headlight switch out of the dash but can only work at night. hard to see exatly what goes on. Any hints on how to remove the switch knob???

Problem solved, I had the same argument with a mechanic, if you pull the h/light switch out one click you get low beam and parking lights, at this point you can flick the indicator stalk forward and get parking lights only or if you pull the h/light switch two clicks you get both parking lights and park lights if you then flick the stalk forward you get high beam and parking lights.
The dood I had the barney with worked for the RACQ vehicle inspection dept and would not hear that all 1200's had this lighting arragement.

Learn something new everyday on this site. This might explain why a couple of times headlights on my 1200 "stopped" working when I put the high beam on.

Thanks for the info

There are two lighting circuits available on shoeys.com but the operation as you describe it does not match the circuits.

However your description does match the owners manual I got with the car. Looks like the Aussie cars were wired differently to those sent to the USA
