reading here it seems easy enough to get 100hp or 75kw from a modded A14, if the car weighs 630kg it gives pwr to weight of about 8.4 kg/kw,
Subaru WRX is 1340 Kg /160 Kw, also about 8.4 kg/kw
due to the datsuns short gearing, in theory it should accelerate as fast 0-100 kmh as a WRX, or am i dreamin?

630kgs sounds a bit optimistic but 680 -700 sounds good and I seen a few 1200s with 130-170 hp so I believe you could easily reach 8.4kg/kw but rember the wrx has 4wd and better shocks and tires but I reckon you could get pretty close.

Yeah the power to weight comparisons usually hold fairly true, as long as you are measuring apples with apples and oranges with oranges. In other words, you'd have to talk at the wheel horsepower vs at the wheel horsepower, and not mix them up back and forth. Also, keep in mind the WRX also has AWD so it's going to launch better than a one tire fire 1200 with skinny tires. If both cars had the same power to weight ratio, the potential is there for both cars to perform pretty damn close, but there are just lots of variables to consider. Wet vs dry, drag racing vs. high speed, gearing, suspension setups, etc. All things considered a lot is also to be said for driver's skill as well, I've seen WRX's run very inconsistent at the dragstrip mostly cause the guy didn't know how to drive!

But anyways, no you're not dreaming...it is easy to get our lightweight 1200's to go fast with not much power, but I think you'll need 100hp at the rear wheels (not at the flywheel) to beat a WRX.

How do you figure 100hp? The WRX weighs about twice the 1200, but the HP is 271 HP. So you would need about 1/2 the HP or 135hp.

BUT ... the A14 would need to be turbo or supercharged, because the WRX engine has a much fatter torque curve than a modded naturally aspirated A14 would. Look at it another way, the Subaru engine would make far more HP at 3000 rpm than the A14 would -- even if they made the same peak HP. Peak HP is meaningless for this comparison ???

that would be good to see, a datsun pull the moves on a wrx,
i rekon it would take a pretty good car to do it though

Any healthy CA18DET powered 1200 will eat a WRX alive.

My Bro's 150ish kW SR20DET powered 1600 (1010kg) would always leave them for dead..no contest.

On the track!...of course.
...and maybe not in the wet.

(flashback: 1991/1992 bathurst..GTRs off the startline..oh yeah!!)

thats pretty cool to hear, to think of those WRX boys looking a little silly if a Datsun was to go past them and give them a good flogging. but wouldn't the Rex eat the datsun as soon as it hits boost?
