The gearbox in my ute has 56A written on the side, does anyone know what car this box is out of? It's a dogleg 5 speed.

they came in sunnys and other A series cars with a 5speed option.

56a 5-speed is the good one -- the one the Datsun 1200 GX-5 had. It's got a direct fifth gear (non-overdrive), which makes the five gear ratios close to each other. It's a very lightweight box and apparently rare, so be careful with it, don't put it behind an A15 or turbocharged engine.
