Hi guys.
Pls help.
My datsun 1200 [73] s giving me hell.
For a few days now, I can get her to start up.
I've checked timing, points, condensor, coil, changed the carb, still no luck.

What I've noticed is water moister on the plugs.

What else can I try to start this car up.
Oh, When I've tried putting in petrol into the carb manually, she starts for a while then cuts off again.

One thing for sure, I dont think its a carb problem, neither the pump.

Could it anything to do with compression or anything to do with mechanical within the engine itself.

Help, anyone, everyone.

Any suggestion welcome

If you have moisture on your plugs that would indicate a blown head gasket, I would do a compression check,But this as a rule would not stop the car from running after it had started.
The good thing with older cars it can only be two things to stop from running fuel or spark

Thanks for the reply dude.
You see, I just had the engine overhauled recently.
I havnt had it retorqued as yet, but I've already covered a +-2000kms.

I've checked spark severeal times, seems fine.
Fuel supply seems OK as well.
This car is now pissing me off.

I've had two machs come over and have a look as well.
They also seemed baffeled.
They all say spark and fuel is fine.

What else can it be

Let me see, if you pour a little fuel down the carb throat, it starts & runs for a few seconds [untill the fuel runs out], then stops.
At least, i have assumed that you are pouring a little fuel straight down the carb throat.

The fact that it starts at all tells us that it has spark & compression, &,... ummm,... it's the carb that feeds it fuel, but you say that you don't have a fuel delivery [carb] problem.

Beats me, but pump the throttle while looking down the throat of the carb [with choke open] to see if fuel is squirting from the accelerator pump nozzle. If nothing, remove the plugs, & the fuel line at the carb. Place a container at the end of the fuel line & get a mate to crank it for a couple of rotations only. If fuel comes out OK, then make absolutely sure that the filter is good. What the hell, fit a new one anyway, they only cost a few dollars.

Still no fuel at the end of the pipe? then disconect at the filter & blow [with your mouth] back into the tank [remove filler cap first] Everything OK? then remove the pump, strip & check it as per the manual.

If fuel does pump, then check the carb. Perhaps the needle & seat is blocked, check it. Make sure that the bottom of the bowl is not full of water. If it is, find out where it came from & remove both the water, & the cause.

does it just not idle? when you poor petrol down the carbie can you rev the car and keep it running?
Does the carbie have an electric fuel idle cutoff solenoid? does this have 12volts?

I hadn't thought of that.
Its a '73 model, which did not have an electric solenoid from new, but then again, i fitted a late carb with all the bells & whistles to my wife's 1000, so i guess anything can happen to a 1200 in 30 odd years.

reeves, did they put a new or different fuel pump in it,when it was rebuilt.i ask because it obviously ran for a while, because you got 2000
k on it.if they've put an a15 fuel pump into an 1200 style a12,it'll break the arm on the fuel pump, usually quickly, but maybe your's took a little longer.it definitely sounds fuel.is there fuel visible in the sight glass on the carby?

Oh yeah, in regards to the 12v idle solenoid switch, no problems there as well.
She also doesnt wanna rev.
Besides I've changed carbs a few times now to get to this annoying problem
